Lemme start with some good news. Tolerance wins by a head and shoulders: study shows that "Australians are overwhelmingly accepting of Muslim women who wear a scarf or hijab". (I think this refers to a chapter in the new book Beyond the Hijab Debate: New Conversations on Gender, Race and Religion.)

Food security is a terrible issue in the NT. Quarantining income so that part of it can only be spent on food and basics hasn't really worked the way it was intended - there are plenty of communities where the shop doesn't have the facility to process the Food Basics card (including Mutitjulu, the community right next to the Territory's most famous landmark, Uluru). So lots of people are facing round trips of 1000km to get to a shop where they can buy food. That's if they have access to a working car, with petrol, and the roads aren't flooded.

There was a doco I saw on SBS (I think, or it could have been one of the ABC channels) looking at life in some Aboriginal communities and one group had to take a $200 taxi ride to get to the nearest town with the right shop and a centerlink.
