I am taking a study break from the Master Gardener text - I have already learned a lot about soil structure and fertility, and I look forward to a conversation with Mr. Fan at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas (hopefully in November). After interacting with Humboldt State University students and graduates at the farm last weekend, an idea took root: grad school @ Humboldt! Surrounded by redwoods. A Buddha beam hit me, and i plan on applying for an MA in Social Sciences (Environment & Community) for fall 2007. Most other environmentally oriented masters programs I've looked at require a solid science background, which made me think of getting a BS and then seeing where that took me. More realistically though I will probably take a couple community college science courses (botany/environment related) and see if i can really stay on that path. UH has an appealing Public Admin program that's preferable to the USC Master of Public Art program, because with the former you can integrate natural sciences and environmentalism more openly, along with art, and not just focus on art - even though I would try to work with environmental artists. My resume was all set for the latter program, but I dont think I will ever live a third of my life planning and "administrating" in an office, no matter how good the cause. I wish I could have done more as an art teacher, more community work.

I am also currently looking for jobs involving the environment and/or horticulture, and recently found job openings at the Marin Conservation Corps - but teaching + commute = hell. Just commute itself = hell. I need a break from teaching, and want to build knowledge in horticulture and environmental sciences and planning.

Okay, back to studying.

Here's the cilantro, and calendula buds (I think).
