why do people insist on knowing something that is sure to upset them?

i knew what he heard from the other group was a sarcastic comment directed towards are team. i knew it would definitely upset me since i'm sensitive like that. but why didn't i stop him from telling me that awful, degrading comment?
am i that masochistic?
