Well, so much for keeping up with fest season, LOL. I think I've read maybe two things over at
hd_holidays. I have a bunch of bookmarks though. :-D?
As I noted a few weeks ago, my HP mojo is back as it always is during/after fest season. So much good fic! So many cool pairings! (See some recs below.) Alas, my Star Trek and White Collar obsessions have faded alarmingly. I am hopeful that the new Trek movie will bring me roaring back into the fandom. It makes me sad not to have my old passion for Jim and Bones.
Meanwhile, I still haven't seen the last three episodes of White Collar, and the show is starting up again really soon, isn't it? Argh. I've got to get caught up -- I'm not quite ready to let go of the show yet, though I'm barely reading any fic for it anymore. ;___;
Blame hockey RPF. *headdesk* I've been thinking about how I fell into this fandom by accident, as I often do, without really knowing the "canon" -- and about how you know when you're actually in a fandom as opposed to just wandering around the fringes reading a few stories or casually watching a show. I think for me, it's when I start commenting on a regular basis, and not just dropping an occasional "I have no clue who these characters are, but this was AMAZING" on the very best stories. It's when I start mainlining fic instead of just following a few random recs, and adding comms/journals to my flist to get more of it. It's when I start seeking the canon, not just the stories. And it's when I finally admit I'm in fic-love with a character (er, in this case a real-life person), because that always seems to be my gateway drug -- see Remus Lupin, Brian Kinney, Leonard McCoy, and now Jonathan Toews.
What are your sure signs that you've arrived in a new fandom?
Have some recs.
HP FIC
A Song, Incomplete by Anonymous (Harry/Draco, NC-17)
This piece already had four pages of comments before I read it, so obviously most people have seen it, but I'm reccing it just in case! The premise is that James, an auror, gets in trouble at work, and Draco is the lawyer who offers to defend him. He's also Harry's ex. I liked the way the author hints at what drove him and Harry apart years ago without ever getting clunky with flashbacks, and how the two make their way back together again.
Hidden Messages and Star-Crossed Lovers by
mindabbles (Harry/Draco, Teddy/Scorpius, NC-17, rimming, object penetration)
I really liked how the author brought together two different romances -- and some ridiculously hot sex scenes -- into an intriguing plot involving queer magical history. Creative and satisfying.
No Mountain High Enough by
katmarajade (pre-Charlie/Neville, PG-13)
Hark, fic for me! \o/ Neville has come to work as the herbologist at Charlie's dragon reserve, and he's the only one brave enough to go into the mountains after Charlie is knocked unconscious and dragged away by a dragon. I love when Neville is this awesome and competent. :-D
HP ART
Every Breath You Take by Anonymous (Harry/Draco, R/NWS)
Beautiful colors and shading, heaps of emotion, and the most beautiful ass I've seen in fanart in quite a while. ;-)
Subtlety is Overrated by Anonymous (Harry/Draco, PG-13)
Mmmm, Aurors Potter and Malfoy kissing. Sweet!
Look at me by Anonymous (Severus/Lily, R, warnings)
A chilling concept, gorgeously drawn.
An Outing by
kath_ballantyne (Minerva/Poppy, R)
McGonagall and Pomfrey go shopping for sex toys. Just delightful!
STAR TREK FIC
River Junction by
lindmere (Kirk/McCoy, NC-17, AU, non-explicit references to past child abuse)
This is the third (and, the author says, probably final) story in an awesome AU trilogy in which Jim is a movie star and Bones a small-town doctor. (I recced the first story
here.) You don't need to know anything about Star Trek to read and enjoy this series -- the writing is excellent, and this third story has the most beautiful ending you could hope for.
If you enjoy something, consider letting the author or artist know! :-)
P.S. Is there anyone out there who'd be interested in my posting hockey RPF recs? I feel like there are only a couple other people on my flist who are even in the fandom, and they probably are on top of all the good AO3 stuff anyway, but if there are any casual folks who'd appreciate hockey recs, do let me know. :-) I've got a zillion, but I don't know whether it's worth writing them all up.
