I appear to have spent this entire month reading instead of reccing, and now I have so many things to point to that it's too much for one post. Argh. So I'll do a couple of posts today, starting with some things I enjoyed over at Yuletide:
The Witch of Blackbird Pond
they that go down to the sea in ships by Lirazel (Kit/Nat, G)
This is a gorgeous postscript to the book that offered everything I could've imagined I wanted for Kit. Made me want to reread the book.
Shelter
On this new morning by exeterlinden (Shaun/Zach, R)
While I loved this movie, the ending always felt a tad rushed to me, like the characters had leaped too quickly and easily into a happy little domestic family. This fic examines the potential complications of that decision in a way that felt right to me.
The Charioteer
Essex is guilty and condemned to die by Naraht (Ralph/Laurie, PG-13, homophobia)
This is a powerful look at how Ralph and Laurie's relationship might have been affected by the homophobia and political witch hunts of the 1950's. The author effectively captures the tone and character voices of the book, and I loved the bittersweet ending.
The Cutting Edge
how we spin (and spin) by tree (Doug/Kate, PG)
I absolutely had to rewatch "The Cutting Edge" after reading this fic, which picks up where the movie leaves off. Doug being so goofily in love made me smile.
Feminist Ryan Gosling/Critical Theory RPF
When Fics Take on a Life of Their Own by storiesfortravellers (Michael Fassbender/James McAvoy, R, sexist language and discussion of domestic violence)
I had never heard of Feminist Ryan Gosling and I'm not into the RPF pairing discussed here, but I found this a really interesting read because of its meta thoughts on fandom, gender, and feminism.
Little Women
Nocturne by
velvetmouse (Laurie, Beth, Jo, G, canon character death, AU)
This fic imagines what might have happened if Laurie didn't go to Europe and got to say goodbye to Beth. I found it very moving.
If you enjoy something, consider leaving a comment or kudos for the author!
