Recs + Random Star Trek TOS Thoughts

In other news, SO and I have watched a couple of Star Trek TOS episodes together. All I can say is: hee. :-D
Although, no, maybe I have one more thing to say. As I mentioned, we've only watched two episodes (The Man Trap and The Trouble with Tribbles), and it's been over a decade since I saw the movies, so I don't have much basis for my next statement. But -- the character of Bones in TOS isn't exactly what I was expecting. He doesn't really seem all that cranky or even gruff. Is that characterization (which I've been seeing constantly in fic) based entirely on Urban!Bones? Or fanon? Or have I just not seen enough TOS to see Bones at his grumpy best?

Nnnnnnngh. Three gorgeous women in various shades of undress. I love the soft glow the artist has given their skin...and I can't seem to stop looking at Ginny's eyebrows and eyelashes. Lovely.
Hold You Close by kath_ballantyne (Scorpius/Rose, G)
There's something about this that makes me feel warm and happy. These two look so adorable, like they're still newly in love and a little bit shy with each other.

Viv always does gorgeous graphics (see my profile page for another example), but she's really outdone herself with these three headers. She's found a spark of truth and vulnerability in each of these characters, and brought that spark out visually.

Fade by canis_takahari (Kirk/McCoy, NC-17, AU)
I just read this one tonight after a stressful day and was immediately swept out of my irritated thoughts into the world the author has created. It's about Jim and Bones as FBI agents and it's wonderful, full of snappy dialogue and believable characterizations. Pike has a great secondary role.
Angular Momentum by lindmere (Kirk/McCoy, NC-17)
I'm not quite sure how to sum up this one -- it's kind of a Groundhog Day scenario, complete with science and romance and philosophical discussion. Beautifully crafted and thought-provoking fic.
Contraband and Communications by garglingargoyle (Kirk/McCoy, NC-17, spanking, BDSM, sex toys)
The first one of these fics took me a bit by surprise -- I am sort of notorious for skimming over warnings, so I wasn't expecting a fic that started with Bones and a kitten to turn into what it did, especially since there's not much warning in the fic itself (at least as far as I could see). But the second fic delves much deeper into the dynamics of this relationship, particularly what Jim needs and what he won't quite let himself have. Hot and insightful and real.
Off the Old Block by rawles (Joanna McCoy with hints of Chekov/Joanna and Kirk/McCoy, PG-13)
This fic made me smile and ache at the same time. It's a nuanced, believable portrait of Joanna as a teenager, prickly and intelligent and trying to figure out who she wants to be. Wonderful interactions with her dad, Kirk, and Chekov.
Yes by red_at_three (McCoy/Chekov, Chekov/OMC, R)
I was really charmed by this one -- I love the realistic way Bones and Chekov fumble through the beginning of their relationship (or lack thereof), not always sure of what the other is feeling or needing. Warning: There are some SPAG errors and I found Chekov's accent to be a little distracting, but the story and the characters were so compelling that I had no trouble ignoring those little issues.
