She was 19 summers to be exact, but what’s bubbling under her skin isn’t streams of teenage emotions, rather an ocean of thoughts, cold and unrelenting waves of logics and tactics, where ruthless strategies are conceived and stored in every moment and calculations of moves and acts are happening in the rate of an eyeblink. Her body is a moving, fully-operating library that contains the secrets of the worlds under one eyelash.
She was never the one with the heart. The Ice Princess is what her enemy has in their lips before her enchanted arrows struck their lungs dead. At the age of 10 she conjured her own death spell and since then it had taken more lives than a human general could in 10 lives. Nobody else could use it, as every intonation, every tone, even the singlest little breaths were ultimately calculated by the princess to be designed in a way that only her powerful mind can control.
Her arrows were fast as lightning, and her feet is the flashes. She doesn’t make a sound when she moves, but her strike is always deadly. One jab from her hands and three enemy generals burst into bloody deaths. Even her gaze can slice trees into half. With all her skills tempered in years of war, the title Heartless Amazon or Cold-Blooded Bitch was nothing new for her.
That’s why when she woke up with a bright smile even 10 days after new years, she felt a little disgusted at herself. A little, before she turns completely giddy again and continued smiling like a normal girl.
Junsu watched her in amazement as the newly-woken princess giggled herself to laughter. But before he could move a finger, she had swallowed it all into a smile and turned to him.
“I guess without talking, you already know that I’ve lost my mind.”
He sighed.
“I’m worried about you.”
“Why? Because I’m acting like my age and gender?”
“Somehow, yes.”
She ran and hug her older brother.
“This little sister loves you for caring about her.” She whispered in his ears.
Junsu can’t held back a sheepish smile. Amidst all the chaos that had erupted, inside she was still the little girl he met with his brother years ago. His sister.
“This half of a big brother loves you back with too much worries in his heart.”
“And his other half wonders why you’re not ready yet for the morning meeting in 5 minutes.” Junho said, leaning on the door frame with his arms crossed in his chest. Changmin gasped before she scrambled to the door, not forgetting to give Junho a peck on the cheeks before she ran to her wardrobe room. The twin smiled.
“Are you still mad about that prince?”
“It’s okay. As long as he doesn’t break her heart, that is.”
“It’s bound to be.”
“I hope not.”
“Junho, stop dreaming. He’s a human, can he really accept us?”
“Changmin accepts him, that’s reason enough for all of us to obey.”
“But, Junho!”
“I’m sure she would like us to give her privacy and freedom of judgment. We’ll be the first one to catch her, I assure you that.” Junho turned around, glaring at his little brother to make his point. His glare quickly diminishes as he sees his little brother looking frail and helpless, unable to stop himself from feeling jealous and angry. He held the almost-sobbing Junsu close to his heart, letting themselves fall into their own world for a few second before the princess returned, all ready for the meeting.

“And so, our next matter to discuss is…”
And the meeting goes on, as issues of domestic causes and events were discussed, ministers debates against ministers upholding their own ideas and suggestions. Few of this notion-fights resolves without the Queen’s consent on the matter, and she smiles everytime one decision was made peacefully and unified. Changmin would smile too, expressing the royal family’s love for peace, even if her smile still cracks and cold aura still seeps out of her face. The meeting had come to an unusually easy flow as problems of the queendom fell apart quickly and dissectation of the matter brought provable solutions that were to be carried out immediately.
“And it has come to our attention today that our dear guests from Granada will be leaving in three days, is that so?” Minister Kangin spoke. Hums of disagreement and rejection were heard from the line of ministers, although Yunho nodded at the statement.
The princess felt her heart lost a beat. Her brothers lost some seeing the sudden look on her face. Though one of them also felt something else.
She couldn’t hear anything else, the vivid image of Yunho agreeing on the words replayed again and again in her heart.
And when the meeting was dismissed, her feet quickly flew out of the room, her pale blue dress swished against the wind in her wake.
Jaejoong simply smiled at her daughter’s reaction.
That’s what love does.
///
“Please tell me this isn’t true.”
Yunho was about to turn around the corner when a soft yet deadly voice ringed in his ear.
He turned around to see his heart, dressed in worries and anguish, looking back at him with eyes torn between anger and tears. He had never seen Changmin so volatile, it’s like the princess had suddenly gone mindlessly rabid, scales started to show on her shaking arms and shoulders. He moved in closer, only to see a single tear trickling down her cheeks. He quickly moved in, pulling the princess closer and kissed her tear. The result was only in more cascading tears.
Changmin had never felt more insecure in his life than the moment she’s in Yunho’s arms, knowing full well all her hopes is going to be dashed and she’s going to return being the heartless princess everybody praised in war songs. She actually liked being a little girl again, but all good things must come to an end and she knows it. So she held back her tears and smiled even if she failed, and bowed graciously out of Yunho’s embrace and moved away.
However, Yunho didn’t want to let her go, so badly that he actually pulled the princess back into his arms quite forcefully and grabbed her face, kissing her in the with all the tears mixed up. Changmin didn’t want to let go and have it to end, but she must. So she pulled away softly, gazing back at the loving eyes with watery gleams of hopes and went away, her periwinkle dress flew in the wind as her little patters of died dreams treaded the silent hallways. Yunho shivered, the cold wind never felt that chilling as the warmth of another body had completely left him, that and his heart.
He knows he will come home a broken man. But he didn’t care.
Yoochun patted his brother’s shoulders, sympathizing with the man even if he never felt that kind of longing. He knew how crushing it is from tales, legends and stories, however he has yet to feel it.
Unknowing to him, a pair of eyes quickly moved away from his body, feeling dirty for eyeing another man when he bumped with his brother.
“Don’t even explain.”
“I know. Let’s just return.”
“Junsu.”
“I don’t get it myself, okay? 21 summers and this is the first time I felt like this.” Big blob of tears suddenly rushes to the sides of his eyes, “I-I don’t feel like myself, but I don’t know how to get rid of this…” But Junho had grabbed his twin’s shoulder quicker than it could have sagged to the floor.
“Ssshh, Su.”
“I’m, hiccup, sorry, I’m being all sappy like this.”
“Don’t worry, li’l bro, It’s okay.”
“I know, I know. Changmin will be mad to see me crying like this, though.”
“Damn hell I would. How dare you keep this as a secret from ME!”
The pouting princess strikes again, making her two elder brothers yelp in shock.
///
Junsu had calmed down considerably, his shoulders were still sagged though he was already capable of smiling again. The princess left him in his brother’s care back in their chamber, while she whisked herself away to drown again in her newly-acquaired problem, one that she would’ve loathed had it appeared years ago but now embraced with a feeling of lost and insecurity. She was going to miss Yunho.
Being taught of the ways of the royals since the day that she was born, she held her chest high and kept her tears to herself. But there is a limit to what a girl can do, and this was bordering the fine line of it. Her periwinkle dress was soon donned for a deeper sapphire plain dress and no jewelries at all. She let her hair loose, long and black waved in the air as she shunned herself to the temple.
///
Incense flickers as the silent hallways of the temple grew somber. The soft flicker of candles on the wooden walls casts shadows into a state of pale black. The screened doors lay thin, but holds out against wind all the same as a ten-foot thick iron wall. The lingering incense smoke brought the scent all over the room, inhabiting every space and lulls people to silent slumber. Only those that have enough will-power can stand in the room and actually breathe, given that the doors are rarely opened and the incenses never burns away.
A single chant echoed in the room, fighting for space against the incense scent. The air grew more heavy with powerful layers of magic draping over the wall, as energy radiates from the center of the room where one single princess sits calmly, with her eyes closed and her sleek tail furled behind her and two thin stick of incense clasped between her hands with spells and prayers seeps out of her mouth like a waterfall cascading the whole room with whispers filled with intensified longing.
The golden altar in front of her looked haunting, with a golden statue on top of it gleaming as the twinkling lights of candles shone on her. Her eyes unfazed, her body sleek and curvaceous, her arms clasped tight in her chest and her scales gleamed powerfully even under the dimming candles. As the room grew darker the chants grew faster and faster, jabbing the whole silence with its rapid incantation until the small flames flickered under the raspy breaths of the princess.
“What should I do? What should I do? What should I do?”
And the flames flickered away, carrying her yearning wish for guidance to the darkness, fleeting to the hands of the great goddess beyond.
///
Savitri, why are you following me?
Forgive me, O Yama, but I am not following you.
Apparently, you’ve been trailing me, is it not?
I beg your forgiveness for saying once again that I haven’t been following you.
Then what are you following, dear princess of yore?
Perhaps my limitation has blocked me from knowing what or why.
Then Savitri, is there another matter you need to consult with me?
O lord of the death, I praise you for your kindness for this frail human being, if you may, my lord…
Be quick with it, Savitri, I have no more business in here.
If you may allow me to spoke out of my turn, I would be forever delighted to have you as my audience to hear of what I believe is true?
Lay what you have to lay, and keep the rest to yourself.
Perhaps obedience is of virtue to human, is it not? How one’s fastidious attempt in confining himself in the ways of the Divine Law is the most noteworthy merit he should have in his life?
I agree. Continue on.
And Savitri poured out all her humbleness and politeness, praising the Lord of Death for his just rules, and how he is the King of Karmic Law for taking balance of good and bad deeds of a human, and how he does his works of eons all in the name of duty and stability of the world, and the legend of his name shall be rung in honor and loyalty and worship until the end of time, all Yama approves and gleefully accepts. Finally, he relented.
Savitri, you have proven that my time spent here is not worthless indeed, as you have entertained me with everything that you have known and it begets me with joy to see such a fervent worship from you. For that, I will grant your wish, name any you would like, except for your husband’s life.
It is such an honor, O Lord of Death, to bestow upon such a lowly servant such as this frail woman.
Time is not my reign, o dear princess, please do us two favour and speak of your desires.
I have no bigger desires, my Lord, than to see both my parents and parent in-law to have glory and sovereignty.
Such devotion to parents! You amaze me ceaselessly, Savitri. Very well, I glorify your kingdom and returns Dyumatsena’s kingdom back to his hand.
Thousands of praises would never suffice to express this human’s gratitude, my Lord, however…
Ah, what is it, princess?
How would my father-in-law rule when he cannot see how wide his glory is?
Ah! Very smart of you, Savitri. Very well then, I hereby gives sight back to his eyes!
Years of servitude will never be enough to praise your kindness, my Lord. However…
Again, Savitri? No matter, I have power and you please me well, now speak.
How will my father-in-law’s kingdom be glorious when I am unable to carry out my duty as a daughter-in-law?
Yes, Savitri, I agree. May your womb be as fertile as the fields of heaven.
Yes, but…
And at that point, Savitri raised her face from the ground, tears running through her mudden cheeks that were soiled from chasing after Yama from mountains to mountains, staring at the god with pleading eyes.
How will I have children without a husband?
And Yama laughed, his giant form suddenly disappears from sight as his laughter echoed thoroughout the forest, ringing everywhere in the weeping princess’ ears.
You have tricked me, Savitri! You have bested me in my own game! Ahahaha, very well! Be it known that I admit defeat only to one human and that is you! Your devotion to love is what kept you chasing me, dear princess. No bodily strength can carry you through those mountains you've passed to chase me! Only true devotion of the heart can pull people to one another, and only true love that can scare death away. Be happy, Savitri! Return to your husband and be by his side, forever!
And Changmin knew what to do.
///
When she woke up, all the candles were dead and the somber statue stared at her, lying on the floor, the two incense stick has turned into ashes. She regained herself and praised the Goddess for her guidance, and she hastily retreated herself from the deepest room of the temple.
///
She sat solemnly in her throne, her long robe of dazzling emerald and peridots gleamed sadly under the remaining sunset lights that had managed to seep from the open windows. Gazing forlorn at the open doors in front of her, she let out a sigh. Her mind wandered to heavens, looking for approval of what she had done as she let her cheeks rest in the fist of her hands, leaning in the armrest.
“Sooner or later she will leave me, and as much as I want to hold her for as long as I can, she’s the only one who picks the time when to leave me be.”
“Your highness…”
“Please don’t turn your fangs on me, Junsu, Junho.” Jaejoong smiled sadly. “She asked my permission to go with the man who caught her heart. Would I still be a worthy mother had I forbid her to go?”
The twin dropped their heads, taking deep, retreating breaths to let their scales disappears. Jaejoong let more and more tears sprints down her snow-white cheeks, her emerald tail wraps tighter around the throne.
“It hurts me too, my sons. It hurts me more than you could ever imagine to let her go.”
Their garnet scales flashed, before finally disappears into supple, tan skins.
“However, I am not going to have my daughter’s well-being to be put in foreign hands that easily.”
Their heads quickly raise, meeting up with the Queen’s expectancy.
///
Yunho had just finished putting all his garments inside the box when he turned around to see Changmin, blocking the door with her body while gasping for air.
“I want to come with you.”
Nothing ever sounded as deliciously poisonous as that to the prince.
But he bit the apple anyway, fully aware of what danger may come.
Changmin knew maybe she had bitten too much for her to chew, but she doesn’t care at all. She’s taking a chance in this, because she chose this man to devote herself to.
And true love scares the shit out of death. Permanent.
