As the youngest child, I can tell you it has a lot to do with idolizing your older sibling. They're older than you, which makes them cool--and when you're a kid, all you think about is growing up. At least I did. So I would follow my sister around, and she was horrid to me, because I wanted her attention, wanted someone cool to think I was worth said attention. It has a lot to do with wanting to be bigger than you are, I think.

Also, re: alien names. Wikipedia has this niffty random function. Just keep going through it until you find something you like. That's what a friend and I did when she needed an alien name.

I'm the eldest as well, but my little sister says it's because she thought I was the coolest person ever, and had the best ideas, and was the smartest ever (I'm thinking Stockholm Syndrome or something). It might have something to do with the occasional semi-parental role oldest children often have.

I have Hideki equal parts wanting to be Hikaru and equal parts hating Hikaru because he was/is so much better than him. (There is some truth in this but not as much as Hideki thinks he is).

I've been stuck on a scene near the end where he lets lose at Chekov and rants at him at length about exactly why he hates/loves his brother so much.
