Vin had no idea what to do at funerals. It was strange, given how many people she had lost in her life but none of them had ever died in a situation where they could be properly remembered. She hadn't even been there for her mother's death, having been taken away by Reen. She hadn't even known Reen was dead until years after the fact and things had moved far too quickly after Kelsier's death for there to be any kind of memorial.
She'd seen so many deaths but never a single funeral for any of them.
She hadn't known Neal but Jenn had cared for him and Jenn was her friend, so if she was asking for people to be there then Vin wouldn't refuse. She stood barefoot in the sand just out of the ring of firelight, wearing a simple black dress that she'd taken from one of the stores after doing some research into what you were supposed to wear at a funeral. Jenn had requested formal attire so Vin had come appropriately, although the effect was only mildly spoiled by the belt around her waist holding her two sheathed knives and multiple cel-phone holsters improvised to carry her metal vials in.
She'd respect Jenn's wishes but she wasn't prepared to go unarmed while she did.
Jennifer turned away from the gathering masses and walked towards her friend, the girl she was so desperately close to, and was just glad to see her. Someone else was alive, someone she cared for.
"Thank you for coming." She said softly. "I know you weren't a fan of his."
Vin heard Jenn approaching and turned to meet her friend. She still didn't know what to do there, if there were any words she could say or actions she could perform to make what had happened better. She'd never found the answer while she was grieving alone.
"I never had anything against him. Just the demon in his head." She said quietly, then glanced away, searching for something to say for a moment. "I'm sorry."
Vin hesitated as she reached out to take the rose from Jenn. Say something? Say what? She looked down at the flower in her hand for a moment before turning and making her way slowly to where Neal lay, pausing just next to the small boat and standing in silence.
"I... I don't really know what to say. I've never had anything to say to a dead person." She frowned a little, turning the flower over in her hand. "I've lost a lot of people but I never thought about whether or not they could hear me. I know I never had anything good to say about you, but I think you really did care about Jenn and that that part wasn't the demon so... I'll make sure she's okay. You don't have to worry about her... wherever you are."
Kneeling slowly she placed the flower in the boat and rose, turning back to Jenn with a look of sudden determination on her face. Moving forward, she crossed the short distance to her friend and reached out to seize the taller woman in a tight hug.
Jennifer let the smaller woman embrace her for a moment before pulling away. "If you do that, I'll start crying again. I really wanted to look dignified today."
