The light is not too good at the beach, with the black out and all, even at eleven in the morning, but it is not hard to find the place for the funeral. Around a well-built pyre of wood from fallen trees from the park are tall torches that had been lit to give the area warmth and light. In the center of the pyre is the familiar body of Neal, dressed to the nines in a charcoal gray suit and a familiar tie, a red rose pinned to the lapel.
Standing alone is a single figure near the surprisingly complex pile of wood and brown foliage in between that would catch fast. Jennifer had certainly taken her own instructions to heart with the strapless black formal gown and pearls she chose to wear. But her feet were bare as she stood in the sand, just close enough to the tide to feel it barely brush against her toes. The pyre was far enough away that it would never get soaked by the water. She was also carrying a mass of long stem white roses as she stood quietly, waiting for others to arrive.
