The city has always been unnaturally quiet with its lack of people and traffic, but around Millennium Park, the unnatural quiet had become an eerie, empty silence. Where there had once been carefully sculpted green spaces and charming art installations, there was now blasted wasteland, the very ground charred and barren in the wan, flickering light of dying emerald flames.
A miasma hung over the park, stinking of charred flesh and liquid slag, of ozone and the aftermath of violent, destructive magic. Even those without any magical senses would pick up on the undeniable wrongness that clung to the park.
And in the midst of the destruction, Cloud Gate stood. Or, more accurately, did not stand. Where the gleaming metal sculpture had been before, there was now a sloping crater, all the concrete and metal around it incinerated to ash by the fires of destruction. At the bottom of the blackened crater, the remnants of Cloud Gate rested, a pool of pristine metal, an eternally frozen pond, its mirrored surface reflecting the sky above, unbroken except for a rust-red, blood-red, stain in its center.
