As strange and uncertain as this new city was, it would only be right for Fluttershy to try and lighten her mood properly by visiting the party Terra had told her about. Even if she'd never been the most social pony, she wouldn't say no to a party put on by her friends.

Though the weather was just awful outside--ooh, this was really the sort of thing they needed a weather team for--Fluttershy managed to fly over to the theater with no more damage than being a bit wet, and in spite of the storm, seeing the decorations helped to brighten her attitude considerably; it was the brightest place she'd seen in this city yet, and decorations that would have made Pinkie proud.

Glancing about those present--indeed, all humans as far as she could see--the pegasus settled back down to the ground and wondered where she was supposed to start.

Out of sight behind one of the chairs, one of the room's occupants was equally non-human. When Kitten emerged and caught sight of Fluttershy, she paused and studied the pony in confusion. Kitten was no stranger to ponies and certainly unsurprised by the existence of winged horses. No, the source of her confusion was something else entirely. Pink. Pale yellow was not the most common color for a pony, at least not in the lands where Kit lived, but it was not unheard of. A pink mane and tail, however? Kitten was fairly certain those did not naturally exist anywhere in the Mortal or Divine Realms. Were the dreams of young human girls now strong enough to create new immortals? Or was the pony simply from a world entirely foreign to her own ( ... )

The little chirp of noise made Fluttershy jump--not out of fear, this time, but rather out of startled excitement. Upon catching sight of the little dragon, the pony's eyes positively lit up, and she knelt down to get closer. She didn't look much like Spike at all, but there was no doubt that she must have been the baby dragon Fluttershy had heard about before.

"Oh, hello there, little friend! You must be the baby dragon that Thomas told me about." This was very likely the loudest Fluttershy's voice had gotten at any point since her arrival in Chicago, but meeting little dragons was simply so exciting. "I was so hoping I'd be able to meet you. My name is Fluttershy, what's yours?"

The pony could speak. Not like ponies spoke but like humans did. Kitten's confusion grew steadily. With a whistle of surprise, since she had not known Thomas spoke much of her, much less to a people-talking pony as opposed to a People-talking pony, she pondered how to answer that question. Well, if Fluttershy could speak human, hopefully she could read as well. Kitten fell back on the usual standby, holding her name tag up toward the pony's nose. If all else failed, she supposed there was a return to dragon charades.

The confusion of the little dragon was easily read by Fluttershy, and the pegasus tilted her head to one side at the bemused chirping. But regardless, the little creature held up her nametag, which Fluttershy read easily. "Skysong... what a lovely name. It's a pleasure."

She furrowed her brow ever so slightly as gave the baby dragon another look. "I'm sorry, I've only ever met one baby dragon before, and he spoke easily. Can you not talk? I never know what to expect around here..."

Kitten couldn't stop the wave of jealousy that rushed through her at the mention of a baby dragon who faced none of the same communication boundaries she did. She was inventive and intelligent, finding ways to get her point across regardless, but some days it would just be so much easier were she able to speak a language understood by those around her. Her scales greyed slightly for a moment as she pouted and shook her head. She could talk, but Fluttershy would probably not understand a word of it, just like everyone else in the city.

She consoled herself with the thought that at least Fluttershy would treat her as an equal, as she would someone who really could talk, but it barely made up for her bitterness over learning that the lack of communication with all non-dragons was not a standard handicap for young dragonkind.

Skysong's irritation was all too apparent, and Fluttershy brought a hoof in front of her mouth, distressed by the little dragon's reaction. "Oh goodness, I'm so sorry, I hadn't realized it was a sore spot for you." Spoken word or not, the dragon clearly had just as strong a personality as Spike, or indeed any of the animals back home.

Still, the pony tried to give an encouraging smile. "I can only imagine how frustrating it must be. But you must be very smart to still be able to get along with everyone around here. Thomas spoke quite highly of you." To be technical, he had never said any more than there was a baby dragon, and that they could be friends, but Fluttershy's own excitement caused the memory of his words to become a tad embellished.

Kitten had been entirely unaware that any pony's joints allowed that particular gesture, and was distracted amply from her sulk by contemplating the unusual bone structure that this pony must possess to demonstrate distress via a hoof at her mouth. She spent a few seconds pondering this incongruity before nodding graciously in response to the apology and giving a happy trill. Fluttershy was obviously very considerate, and Kitten supposed that someone being surprised when she couldn't speak was better than the usual reaction of being surprised that she could understand.

She preened a little beneath the praise, both from Fluttershy and presumably from Thomas. Thomas tended to complain about Kitten, but his tone and actions always belied such comments, so she knew better than to listen. She was both surprised and pleased that he would compliment her outright. Kitten liked being respected and admired, and Fluttershy was doing both. She whistled her genuine thanks to the pony.
