Now is Not the Time

There's never really a good time to go to the hospital these days, so I quit trying to plan it. I quit trying to figure out when to sneak in. I just need to get a few things out of the office that used to be mine and head back home. Maggie is at school and I need to go to the grocery store and I can't make any more excuses as to why I can't do it

This patient is wearing on my last nerve, and my last bit of patience. Her burns have gone untreated for so long, and they're stubborn. Her body is stubborn. It doesn't want to heal. I take her chart and head to Mark's office to 'borrow' a book. What I find is even better.

"You're back?"

[drmcsteamy]

"No," I answer without looking up, "I'm cleaning out my office."

[dr_alex_karev]

"Of course you are. Well, you can't now. I have an impossible case, and I need your books."

[drmcsteamy]

"I'll leave the books."

[dr_alex_karev]

I set the file and photographs down. "What else are you taking?"

[drmcsteamy]

"My personal things."

[dr_alex_karev]

I pull out the book I need and start to flip through it. "So you're really leaving? Walking away from everything and leaving me holding the bag?"

[drmcsteamy]

"I'm sure that Addison will hire somebody soon. They can't go without a plastics attending."

[dr_alex_karev]

"We're already been without one for a long time. Patients are lacking because of it. This kid's probably going to off herself because of it."

[drmcsteamy]

"Then you can't go that much longer without one. Addison knows that."

[dr_alex_karev]

"She's known it for months. Since you're here, can you give me a quick, off the books consult? This patient's condition is really kicking my ass."

[drmcsteamy]

"I don't think that's a good idea," I answer, "just explain it to me. I'll tell you what to do."

[dr_alex_karev]

"Dude, I don't even know how to." I hand him the photos.

[drmcsteamy]

He hands over the photos and immediately my face falls, "How old is she?"

[dr_alex_karev]

"Sixteen, and she smells like a rotting corpse. I've got her on a morphine drip. She's a mess."

[drmcsteamy]

I shake my head, "Who the hell has been taking care of this girl? Or not taking care of her?"
