Hi all,

My partner and I are relocating to Seattle in a couple of months (yes, we have job prospects and vitamin D supplements), and we want to rent an apartment starting July 1st or better, July 15th. We're going there for a brief visit next week and are hoping to get housing sorted out while we're there.

I've been living in New York City, where dealing with real estate requires advanced combat skills, and haven't apartment-hunted in eleven years, so I feel a bit out of the loop. Are apartments available the 15th likely to be posted next week? Would we be wiser to make appointments from Craigslist postings or just drive around calling the phone numbers on signs? Could a person possibly see an apartment there and get the paperwork all done in a short visit that includes a weekend?

Mocking is fine as long as you also have some helpful advice. Thanks.

Added at someone's suggestion: We're hoping for a one or two bedroom apartment, no carpet, cat friendly and $1000 a month or less, preferably a bit less. Outdoor space would be fabulous. We will probably have one car but primarily use public transportation. Job prospects are both downtown-ish but social life would be scattered all over the place. We're flexible on the neighborhood and would consider accessible suburbs, possibly. I would strongly prefer a gas stove, good water pressure and a landlord who does not live on the premises, but those aren't necessarily dealbreakers.
