Whiskey

*sigh* I'm not a whiskey drinker. I don't hate it, it's just never my favorite.

I need to purchase, somewhere in Seattle's lovely liquor stores, a fifth of whiskey. What's Seattle drinking ( Read more... )

If you're looking to buy something that cheap, then I'll second the vote for Bulleit. (I very much doubt you'll find Maker's Mark in your price range.) That's actually bourbon, which might be whiskey, but isn't whisky. Beyond that, I don't see much to choose from among the cheap blended crap or Glenwhatever singles you'll get for under 30 bucks.

Personally, I'd go for a bottle of Bunnahabhain, but that'll run you closer to $40 or more.

Maker's Mark is less than I thought it would be, but still more than my gift budget. I'll look at Bulleit.

I am in fact a bad friend. A bad friend with an even worse job.

Well, as a bad friend you're in luck, then. IMHO, Bulleit tastes as good as or better than Maker's Mark, at least drunk neat as God Intended. (Anyone who dumps soda pop or ice in their whisky doesn't deserve to live, let alone drink good whisky.) And it comes in a nifty, old-fashioned pressed glass bottle. If you want to go whole hog, you can sometimes find the matching pressed glass lowball or shot glasses on eBay.

Do they deserve to drink bad whisky?

Really??

I am an avowed Maker's person (I like it as a Manhattan - is that how God intended?) and you're saying something on the next shelf down would serve just as well?

Your mileage is your own, of course, but especially if you use your bourbon primarily for mixed drinks I think you'd be just as happy using Bulleit. (And as far as I know, God intended a Manhattan to be made with rye. Personally, I don't generally think it's worth using good liquor in cocktails, because the subtleties are going to be lost once you add fruit juice or sweet liqueurs or bitters, anyhow.)

Yay for Bunnahabhain. Single malt for beginners, in the best sort of way.
