Hi there! So I'm posting something for today's free-for-all, and I was wondering, how long should I wait before posting it somewhere else (i.e., on AO3 and Elysian Fields)? 24 hours, or more?

Another question: LJ is being a jerk and keeps saying the post is too large, but how much do I need to cut? How many words does it allow? Would a banner add to that size? (I've tried eliminating it but it still won't post)
This story is around 10k words, should I split it into two even halves?

Okay, the character limit for LJ posts is approximately 65,000 characters. Formatting adds to it, especially if LJ is trying to keep the formatting that the text originally had before you copied it. A banner would add to the length a little, but not more than a line or two of text if I understand correctly.

If you look at your post in the HTML editor and it is *not* full of "span" tags everywhere, then I think you'll need to split the story in two, yeah. :/

But if you do happen to have span tags everywhere, you could try pasting the text without formatting (either paste it into the HTML editor instead of the rich text editor, or paste into something like Notepad first and then copy from there) and then manually adding back what formatting you really need. However, your word count does seem to be kind of close to the limit, so I can't guarantee that this would work, and it might be simpler to split the post, sorry.

Ooh... well, that's annoying. 😅 No way am I manually adding formatting, this is a porny story so there's waay too many italicised words for that haha. I'll split it.

Well, I don't think I'll be able to post it... LJ doesn't like me, apparently. I've tried posting a 3k word part, but it still says it's too large. *shrugs* Unfortunately, I have a skype call in 20 minutes and it's gonna finish after my midnight, so it seems that I've missed this free-for-all too. I'm miffed, but I have no idea what I'm doing wrong and it's too late to solve it. Sigh. :(

No, I'm not gonna do that... I do like my italics. 😬
I'm bummed about this, but really, I can't believe LJ is being such a bitch about it. I mean, if I had known, MAYBE I would've taken the time to paste it without formatting and manually added every italicised word... but it would've been crazy, anyway. (There's kink and impact play too, no idea how many "smack!"s there are haha)

Fair enough! Sorry I couldn't help. There's *probably* some text editor out there that would keep the italics and get rid of, like, the background color or whatever LiveJournal is freaking out over -- or if you kept making the story parts smaller, eventually they'd have to reach a size that LJ could digest --, but I don't know what that might be, so that's that, unless you feel like experimenting after midnight (posting slightly later would be fine by us, though I realize that you have to sleep too and giving up on this would be a valid choice).

Or. LMAO. The character limit on Dreamwidth is four or five times bigger, and I know I've personally posted at least 5K words of fully formatted text there with no problems, so, uh. Feel like getting a Dreamwidth account very quickly in the middle of the night and posting on that side of the comm? :D It's free, and the post editor is pretty similar to LiveJournal... but I guess that's more for future reference if you keep having this problem on LiveJournal and you want an alternative.

Haha, yeah, I did! The friend I skyped with recommended this link to clean up the formatting: https://wordhtml.com/ and it worked. Not like a charm, seeing as I still had to split the post, but it did work! Thanks anyway so much for trying ♥ you're a star!!
