What are all these people winning anyway?

This has been bothering me like a bee buzzing in the back of my brain for a while now. The widely-used internet acronym FTW confuses me every time I see it. I always have to do a double-take and replay in my head what it actually means. This is because of the Vines.

The final track on the album Winning Days is titled F.T.W. However, it was released many years before those damn three letters were introduced into internet shorthand as "for the win", and so the lyrics lead me to believe that the Vines wished to "fuck the world". And now I come across it when people are expressing glee over a particular picture/concept/hairstyle/fridge magnet or whatever, at which point I get very confused and have to lie down for a bit.

Stripy socks FTW? What? Are you mad because you bought stripy socks? But you seemed so enchanted with them up until that point!

David Tennant doing something wacky FTW? Does his wackiness incite anarchy now?

It was truly revelatory when I worked out what these people were actually saying, but it was also a bit of a let-down. Given the frequency at which this acronym pops up I was expecting worldwide revolution to break out any minute, and had already stocked up on tinned food, toilet roll, and enough ammunition to keep loooters from taking my laptop more or less indefinitely. Climbing back down off the roof was slightly embarrassing, to tell you the truth.

acronyms, thinking too much
