I know you like a lot of music that I abandoned in the late 80's. :) Styx, that's like that other band Journey, yes? Or is it like REO Speedwagon... I don't remember. :)
Not like Journey. Or Air Supply. Or any of those other sappy '80s bands I still like.
It's too bad that they're only known for Dennis DeYoung's power ballads, because most of their music sounds nothing like those. Actually, he doesn't even really do that many, it's just that people focus on the sappy part and forget that it TOTALLY ROCKS OUT after about a minute. In fact, my favorite Styx tunes hardly feature ol' Denny at all.
Although... "Miss America" and "Half-Penny Two-Penny" are almost the exact same song. Hmmm...
Honestly, I wasn't even talking about the power ballads. I just don't like Styx, or any of the rest of them. While it's true that I will sing along, it's only because I still know all of the words (whether I want to or not). It's a bit like hearing Milli Vanilli; I'd still recognize them, I'd probably still know all of the words, but that doesn't mean that I like them.
Ummm... Yes, I am old. Sometimes I even like to say things like "Back when the earth was cooling," and "I fought back 7 bears with my wire-bound notebook when I had to walk up hill both ways, in the year round snow, just to get to school, where they would beat me for anything they could think of." Or maybe I was just born in the 70's, which makes the 80's my musical hell. :) And makes me old. :)
This won't make you feel any better, but the 70s were my dad's musical hell, and he was an actual musician!
Although if we're going strictly by the pattern, then it should have been the 60s for him, but that decade was some kind of remarkable exception.
And the aughts are to me what the 80s were to him, which is funny since a lot of the stuff I like now is 80s resurgence rock/synth pop. Not to mention J-pop and J-rock, which never LEFT the 80s...
I don't like admitting that there are people older than I am out there; I don't know how they made it through the "earth cooling" phase. :)
As far as stuff coming back, oddly enough I tend to like the originals better than the remakes, although it seems kind of odd to me that there are no less than 4 (or 3, I'm not remembering well at this point) of "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode.

I'm a driving hazard whenever I listen to "Too Much Time On My Hands" in the car.
