Explain this to me:
Katamari Damacy / 塊魂 (PS2)
Released: 2004
Price: $19.99
Rating: EXCELLENT
We Love Katamari / みんあ大好き塊魂 (PS2)
Released: 2005
Price: $29.99
Rating: Better multiplay, some interesting modes, worse level selection, worse music
Me & My Katamari (PSP)
Release Date: March 22, 2006
Price: $39.99
Katamari DS (DS)
Release Date: ?
Price: Probably $34.99, if current prices are any indication
Now, the question... WHY are the handheld versions more expensive than their console counterparts? Is it install-base? Development costs? Certainly I might be able to accept those explainations for the PSP, but c'mon -- I already thing that DS games ae WAY overpriced (the profit margins on those things must be sick).
Then there's stuff like Chibi Robo for the GameCube that really should be cheaper than it is. If it was $30? Sure! I'd buy it on the spot. But if it's gonna be $50 I might go for another title I've been putting off for a while. But I still wouldn't consider putting that money (and $10 more) towards a 360 game...
A $50 "no name" game this late in a console's life cycle is pretty egregious. As much as I love Katamari, I probably wouldn't have picked it up if it was $50. I gladly would have paid more than $20, which is why the reasonably-priced sequel was a no-brainer. But given the history of handhelds in general, and the quality of PSP games in specific, there's no way I can believe Me & My Katamari will be superior to its console brethren -- especially $10-20 superior.
