His attention caught by the ring of the bell hung on the door, the almond peepers pointed at the doorway, only for their owner to be disappointed by the sight, quickly retracting the upward curve of his lips.
Hand and cloth continued on their task to put more shine to the countertop.
"Hey sweetie, having a good morning?"
Ignored.
Undaunted as usual, the man made his second attempt for the morning. "You're smelling good toda..."
The thud of a sack of coffee beans landing by the espresso machine cut off his words, the aroma of the seeds overpowering any other scent in close proximity.
"Oh, I could have helped you with that. It's too heavy for..."
It seems like some higher power out there was bent on not letting the man complete his sentences.
Another jingle from the door drew a glance but this visitor did not bring a smile to the porcelain face either.
"It could have been a peaceful morning for Jaejoong, Wataru." Long legs and casual strides brought the speaker over to the counter, where he sat himself on a high stool next to the one already occupied.
Jaejoong kept his eyes on the grinder, sighing as the brown pods were crushed into powder. It could have been a peaceful morning without both of you here.
"It was a peaceful morning until the unnecessary stepped in, Jung." There was not a single chance that the Japanese would give in to his arch-enemy in business and love.
"And the unnecessary must have been really early huh, Jaejoong?" Directing his question to the other man instead, Yunho posted a smile with it, hoping to at least get an acknowledgement.
But of course, work was the main attraction for the silent man and he did not intend to shift the center of his concentration to anywhere else.
Smirking at the fact that his opponent had also failed, Miyawaki imitated the stretch of lips without any affection and tilted his face towards the other.
"Smiles without good intentions are rude to the host, my friend."
Having been pushed opened lightly and held wide, the door's accessory did nothing to announce the arrival of the man that spoke.
The pallor on his face came as soundlessly as his fear had. "X-Xiah?"
"I should be glad that you still remember me, Wataru? It has been quite a while since we last met, but Yunho has told me of your frequent visits. How nice of you to do that." Without much of an expression on his face, Xiah presented almost none of his anger in his words.
Quickly resuming his usual confidence, he stood from his seat and walked towards the younger Korean. "It's good to have you back, Xiah. The world was getting boring without you! Yunho just can't give me the same degree of challenge as you can."
Standing right behind him, Yunho was ready to strike but a glance from Xiah warned off the rash decision.
"I'm sure that you must have given Yunho some good practice, right Yunho?"
"Of course. It was practice." Emphasis intentionally placed on the word 'practice'. It's not like you would be good enough to do anything more than practice.
Angered that he was being ridiculed by the pair, Miyawaki pulled his hand out of the handshake, flinging the other's hand away.
Men from both sides rushed into the room, all prepared to protect their individual bosses.
That was when all hell broke loose.
"Stop!" Jaejoong slapped a chopper onto the countertop, the clang of the blade effectively muting the men in his cafe. "I'm running a business here! You want to fight? Get out and go fight somewhere else!"
If there was a coffee maker who could get men to shut up, its(his) name had to be Kim Jaejoong.
The men who had poured in exited neatly upon the waves of two hands.
Miyawaki turned towards the owner of the place and bowed. "Only if my departure lightens up your mood, love." Fully accompanied by a greasy smile.
And the man left as though he patronized the cafe and had his coffee without any hiccups.
Jaejoong turned to the remnants of his assessed troublemakers and glared.
Fully submitting to the authority of his superior, Yunho stayed wordless, only catching a glimpse of the face he adored.
With a slight nod to signify his apology, Xiah moved to return peace once again to the coffee bar.
---
He almost called out the other's name when he opened the door and stepped over the threshold.
It just was not the same anymore, coming back after work. Coming back to the house.
Silence had never been louder. And the absence of the bubbly chatter only served to emphasize it.
He was pretty sure that he had prepared the dish in the same way he always did for them. But it just did not explain why the taste and scent would not register with his senses.
White spots on the black above. The man whose hand he used to hold, whose body he used to embrace, had spoken of something twinkling. Perhaps twinkle only happened when seen through the eyes of a loved one.
It was past the stage of tear-drops sliding down his cheeks. Now, they flowed as a stream, pooling in a growing patch on the textile surface his head laid on.
---
"Boss, he's paying visits to their allies but evasive as to who exactly he's seeing. They're also using decoys to prevent us from following him."
Stubbing out the cigarette, Miyawaki lighted another, keeping the room in its fume-filled state. "Find out who he has already visited and then work out who could be next. He can only have that many friends, can't keep us guessing for long. Go."
"Yes, Boss. I'll start on that straight away."
"Xiah, how many lives can you lose before you're dead? No worries, I'll make this your last one."

A/N:
1) I'm back, after the ultra long hiatus. Truth be told, I think that this long break might just be better than me trying to write when I couldn't and sprouting rubbish which would disgust every reader.
However, I hope that my writing style has not changed too much. First half of this chapter was written before I suddenly "lost it" more than a year ago. And I've tried reading through when I completed the piece, made changes to smoothen it. *prays that it runs*
2) I'm saddened by the lack of DBSK now that I'm back. I didn't know till the beginning of this year (and I spent last autumn/winter in Korea *fails*), after which I tried turning to SJ (I did ship them too, only less than DBSK), only to realise that they also had their own losses. *fails & fails again*
*bows deeply and presents one-shot as peace offering*
Sonata of Temptation It's a SJ piece posted at Miracle, clearly stated here first so you can decide whether to read or not.
