Okay, folks, it's time for the official reminder that the deadline is fast approaching to gain the right to nominate for the 2011 Hugo Awards and John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. This means that if you have an interest in shaping this year's final Hugo and Campbell ballot, you need to fulfill the requirements like, super-soon. And what ( Read more... )

Yah -- what were we going to nominate again? I am totally blank on which books came out which year when it comes to the Hugos. I'm pretty good on the Aslans.

Yeah, I know. I have nominated occasionally, but not nearly as often as I should given how many Worldcons I go to.

Part of that is because as Lisa alluded to, I tend to be busy reading for a completely different award I volunteer for around the time Hugo deadlines come up, but that's only a so-so excuse; the ability to nominate for an award you care about (whether that's the Hugo or, say, the Pegasus) is both a power and a responsibility.

It can be difficult, but you're right; it's a power and a responsibility. And if we don't nominate, we don't get to complain when our preferences aren't represented.

It's true. We can still complain that the thing we wanted to win didn't win -- as long as it was nominated and we voted.

And I've finally gotten around to nominating in all categories for which I had opinions.

One thing worth mentioning (particularly as I hadn't remembered this was the case until the webthing reminded me):

There's no reason not to nominate and submit what you can come up with. The system -will- let you cast later nominations and override what you previously nominated for--and in the meanwhile, you've got a voice.
