Are you coming to our party? Our Reno WorldCon party?

Okay, folks, it's time for the official reminder that the deadline is fast approaching to gain the right to nominate for the 2011 Hugo Awards and John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. This means that if you have an interest in shaping this year's final Hugo and Campbell ballot, you need to fulfill the requirements like, super-soon. And what ( Read more... )

This is, perhaps, one major reason I regret no longer living in Reno. I will not get a chance to schmooze with you and other authors I admire and do the schoolgirl "Squee!" over*.

I do hope that you have a wonderful time and don't feed the slots too much of your hard earned income.

*Which is really ridiculous (and embarrassing) when uttered by an Old F*rt such as me.

I am unlikely to give the slots any of my income. Unless you count the ones on the soda machine, where I play a fun game called "Can I Win A Diet Dr Pepper?" Guess what! I can!

Ah, but the locals know where the Last of the Penny Slots hide.

Oh, if you happen to encounter a suave, charming, blond rogue of a magician named Robert, tell him Kat says "Hi!". I think he may still be working there. Just don't let him kiss your hand or you may be missing a watch.

Yah -- what were we going to nominate again? I am totally blank on which books came out which year when it comes to the Hugos. I'm pretty good on the Aslans.

Yeah, I know. I have nominated occasionally, but not nearly as often as I should given how many Worldcons I go to.

Part of that is because as Lisa alluded to, I tend to be busy reading for a completely different award I volunteer for around the time Hugo deadlines come up, but that's only a so-so excuse; the ability to nominate for an award you care about (whether that's the Hugo or, say, the Pegasus) is both a power and a responsibility.

I had a supporting membership last year, and have one for this year, too, but next year in Chicago! The process of making lists and trying to talk my friends into joining me there has already begun.
