"Except the Gays and the Italians"

Mar 19, 2006 18:27

The Simpsons taught us that not everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day. And please, don't freak out about "the gays" bit. It's a quote, and my entire family is gay. I hate that word, almost as much as it's F'ing equivalent.

But my point?

The Irish Community in Chicago is surprisingly dormant in the suburbs. Especially in this area, the communities are mostly Polish, Mexican, and Italian. There are pockets of Irish-ness, but it's getting harder and harder to find them . . .

Except on March 17, where everyone THINKS they're Irish. Apparently, that means drinking yourself into oblivion and acting like a total asshole. It's not, and I get significanty offended on March 17. Not to mention its a RELIGIOUS HOLIDAY to boot.

I don't even drink that much. You all have seen me - three guinness and I get more than a little sleepy. GARRR!

I get so burned up about this holiday. You don't see me dressing up in a black suit and gunning down Irishmen while running booze across the Canadian border for St. Joseph's Day (March 20, the Italian equivalent).

As far as Irish Cuinsine . . . I firmly believe, and I've said this before, that all Celtic Cuisine is fundamentally based on a dare. Sodabread, however, is excellent - with raisins.

My two cents.
