Pretty!

I've been wondering if some scenery upgrades were worth the effort of downloading for my flight simulator. I've already modified overall terrain (Canada, USA, And Europe, along with chunks of Australia) to be more photorealistic, but do I want to bother getting more granular, downloading specific regions of the planet? Really, how much better could ( Read more... )

Q. Really, how much better could this make the flightsim experience?

Yeah, I agree. It's quite fantastic. The first one is very computery and not at all engaging. The second is wonderful.

How accurate is it?

I can't say, because I've never seen Venice. The guys who put out this module claim to have been meticulous in their recreation, but everyone who puts out one of these modules claims the same thing.

I expect the major landmarks are accurate in placement and detail (those domed buildings, that tower, the actual canals, etc) and the rest is just kind of filled in with the correct "type" of scenery (e.g. a bunch of houses are in between these two landmarks, so here's a bunch of houses).

There's certainly enough resources out there to make it highly accurate with satellite maps available for just about every place on Earth (although not too much of Stratford, incidentally...because that's just like Venice. Ahem.).

It would be really neat if it were accurate. You could fly your simulation through Venice and the next time you go, you might recognize things.

Neat!

What kind of a preformance hit does it cost?

It is perceptibly slower than the less glorified version, but still smooth enough a ride. The trade-off (to me, anyhow) is worth it.
