Cool! I thought the effect was pretty good, although it was hard to see against the backdrop of the bookcase. I would have liked to see your "summon" the lightsabre to an area a bit farther away with a plain background so I could see the action a bit better.

Yeah I figured out I was standing too close to the bookcase only after I started working on the post-production. I've got a nice one of the lightsaber floating on it's own in front of the white wall, with a shadow and everything, that looks much more convincing.
I think the 'problem' with the first video is that the movement of your hand isn't synched with the movement of the saber (does that make sense? Your hand moves faster, and more unevenly than the spin of the saber.)
I tried syncing the lightsaber exactly to my hand on the first past, and it looked dopey: like somehow the lightsaber was glued six inches above my hand, and would follow my hand movement precisely. What would look better would be if (a) I held my hand a little more steady, and (b) I spent a LOT more time (almost frame by frame) adjusting the saber position. I was being lazy. ;-)
I deliberately moved my hand faster than the saber would spin; I wanted it to like I had to stir the currents of the force a bit before the saber would get moving. What I failed to remember, though, was to STOP moving my hand again.

Oh, well. It was a fun experiment anyhow. :-)
