Reading Wednesday

Because I'm actually reading for pleasure again! Well, okay, I've been reading a bit for pleasure all along, only with really long intervals between books. But I am making a concerted effort at this point. Anyway, I am on a non-fiction kick, and I bought what I thought was a biography of Hildegard von Bingen. Instead, the introduction was this offputting New Age-y chant of praise, and the beginning of the first chapter wasn't proving any better, so I bailed. The book is Hildegard of Bingen: Saint For Our Times, for avoidance purposes. Or, if you've read it and it actually turns into a decent biography, that would be good to know too.

I have a decent chunk of non-fiction on my Kindle (I had to get strict with myself about compulsively buying, because they make it so easy!), so I had to ponder what I wanted to read next. I decided to give a known quantity a try and finally started All the Fishes Come Home to Roost, by Rachel Manija Brown. Disclaimer: I know the author. I'm not sure if it's a good thing or bad thing how much the book is resonating with my state right now. It's very, very funny and very, very grim all in one. Brown's childhood was horrific, frankly, the sort of horrific that needs the humor she brings to her recollections. If you're like me and have had every intention of reading this book since it was published, or are just now hearing of it, it's a great time to start reading. As for me, I'm almost done, and then I'll get to figure out what to read next. We'll see if I've decided by next Wednesday.
