And in summer there is honey and fruit.

Two more things subbed, a draft completed, and now I am taking the opportunity to devour the latest issue of Goblin Fruit, of which there shall be a write-up. I am also pondering the logistics of doing a recording of "American Mermaid" that sounds how I want it. I may have to hunt a recorder to take down to the tide. I am also inclined to look at beta notes for some of the shorts for the first time in something like a year.

If you guessed I have resigned the slush gig, you would be correct. I had no idea it was taking up this much mental space and emotional energy. Let that be a lesson to me, one I'll have to consider very carefully before taking another such gig, no matter how much the material would match what I write. Not so incidentally to that whole pensive process, "try to learn CSS" has once more been moved up in the list of priorities, so. We shall see what comes of that.

It's not inconceivable that the move and the acquisition of Hilda have helped my mental state as well. I now have a bit of a commute to and from work each day, which means time spent driving in San Diego in the summertime and listening to my Driving in Summer playlist. Below, thirteen selections (out of 100 songs; it was tough to narrow down, is what I'm saying):

Dave Matthews Band - Old Dirt Hill (Bring That Beat Back)
I mentioned to asakiyume in a comment in her journal that DMB have made their name on college-aged lovesongs, and I like a fair chunk of those, I admit. On their B-sides, though, DMB is inclined toward a musical style and topics that I refer to in my brain as very American Gothic. Nearly the entirety of the album Stand Up is like that, though generally lighter in tone. This particular song is one of the best for groovin' in my library.

Crystal Method - Magic Carpet Ride
Speaking of groovin'. The original of this song is fun, but I dig the hard edges of this cover.

Dong Bang Shin Ki as Tohoshinki - Sky
My boys do dance singles for the Japanese market every summer. This is the one from 2006. I like the way Jaejoong's voice just soars above the harmony.

The Proclaimers - Gonna Be (500 Miles)
Yep, it's that song from Benny & Joon. I love that movie, and I love this song. It is so very peppy and joyous.

Paul Simon - Under African Skies
The Graceland album is good for summer roadtrips, but I especially like this song. It's also excellent for walking, as it sets up a strong, steady rhythm.

Anyband - Promise You
Okay, so Samsung makes this series of phones for which they have a series of commercials called Anycall. The commercials feature various Korean media icons. Anyband consists of solo artist BoA, Tablo of the rap group Epik High, Xiah Junsu of Dong Bang Shin Ki, and jazz pianist Jin Bora. The commercial is derivative of various dystopic SF classics in ways not unlike Equilibrium, but with pop music. This is the anthem of the in-commercial revolution, and eminently car-danceable.

Tom Cochrane - Life Is a Highway
For much of my life, summer has meant moving or roadtrips, which means this is the first song I play when we hit the highway. This is the original, not that bit of sacrilege featured in the movie Cars. Yes, despite the accent, I loathe country. I even prefer Johnny Cash when he's covering Nine Inch Nails.

Cheon Sang Ji Hee as Tenjo Chiki - Stand Up People
So, see Dong Bang Shin Ki? This is the female equivalent. That thing about backwards and in high heels holds true, too. This song is unapologetic club music, and reminds me that I need more B-52s for reasons that won't make sense outside of my head, except that all the women involved kick ass.

ABBA - Take a Chance On Me
One year for Halloween, I was Agnetha. All I needed was a trip to the thrift store, some blue eye shadow, and frosted lipstick. If I grew my hair out, I could do it again. If you've heard the jokes about ABBA, but not ABBA themselves, you might give them a try. They didn't get so popular because they have bad voices.

Imani Coppola - Legend of a Cowgirl
All of the album Chupacabra is phenomenal stuff, but this song was the breakout single for a reason. If you're so inclined, you might hunt down the video on your website of choice. It skewers some of the sexist icons of Western media.

Rusted Root - Send Me On My Way
If you've seen the first Ice Age movie, you've heard this song, but I first heard it about ten years before the movie came out when I was kickin' it in Dayton, Ohio. It was infectiously fun then, and it still is. Good for shoulder shimmies.

Indigo Girls - Galileo
A classic from Indigo Girls and arguably their most well-known song, this isn't their most accomplished, but the harmonies are gorgeous and the beat is bouncy.

Superchick - One Girl Revolution (Battle Mix)
The message may be pretty straightforward Grrl Power, but I am totally down with that message, and the crunchy retrobeat doesn't hurt. Turn this one up and rock out at the stoplight.

fine art of getting out of my own way, accounting, sun diego, other people's po'try!, female is my default and my universal, drink the music, to slush or not to slush
