that's enough, facebook.

(Update: I have gotten several messages on AIM from people who feel similarly. Feel free to comment one way or another.)

Facebook, all things considered, has treated me well over the past year. It makes it very easy to keep in touch with people and see what they are up to. I don't think it was necessary to expand it to high schools - I can tell already that it is spreading like wildfire at Salpointe now that some cool kids have their accounts - but all in all, it's a good thing to pass the time and keep up with your friends, particularly when you're someone like me and you didn't go to college with any of them. I could appreciate the photo album feature, the global group thing is useful, I think the status and the notes thing is pretty useless but it's not that big of a deal.

(By the way, I somehow managed to make this livejournal an RSS feed into my facebook notes; it is pretty much overkill , but good for one stop shopping I guess, and now people can read the stupid shit that I write even if they don't actually talk to me, but are somehow friends with me on Facebook. Great.)

Unfortunately, this morning they decided to cross the line.

Now they have this ridiculous feature called "News Feed" which is basically a wall of omniscience. It is basically a list of every possible action of your Facebook friends that the site could possibly track; what groups they join and leave and create, when they change their status, any modifications, minor or major, they make on their profile, who they became friends with, when they were mentioned in a note, changes in relationships, new photos. If you do something and you don't want anyone to know about it, well, you have to do it first and then "hide" it.

[It's going to be weird looking at the image of Facebook on Facebook. That doesn't even make any sense]

Why?

Why would this be a positive development in any way? Why make it easier for people to find out unnecessary information about what you're doing on their dumbass website?

Where, exactly, does Facebook intend on going from here? I don't know what is in the works, but I can't think of anything else they would be interested in tracking.

Chris Sproul picked his nose when he thought no one was looking. 2:30 pm
Brandon Martin farted and tried to pretend it was someone else. 11:15 am
Dylan Clark talked shit about you in a Facebook message; he said you were a huge bitch. You didn't hear it from us though. 7:47 pm

I really hope they take it away. I don't want to know about anyone else's life. If I do, I will go to their profile or just ask them. I don't care if someone I know changed their quote or joined a new group. Just get the hell away from me and let me browse at my own pace.

Everything always has to get so goddamn complicated.
