Ostrov (The Island) is a brilliant movie! If you don't mind subtitles and have a DVD player that plays all regions, you should definitely see this. It's amazing to find a movie that doesn't deride religion, like just about every movie I've ever seen where religion plays a major role (and let's face it, religion has been overwhelmingly ridiculed even subtlely in cinema). The fact that it's coming out of Russia makes it even more amazing. I'm even more amazed that it was shown at the Sundance Film Festival. It follows the life of a man who becomes an Orthodox Monk and it is just a superb and rather accurate view of Orthodox Christianity in general. Here's hoping the Russians come out with some more great movies in the future.
