Pairing: Jonghyun/Key
Rating: this is PG [swearing though]
Genre: Romance, I guess.
Jonghyun's apartment is small, a studio really, right above the shop that he owns and works in. The bedroom resides in a small alcove just off the living room, a little kitchenette with a breakfast bar and a modest and reasonably clean bathroom right off the entryway. The entire space smells rich from the aroma of coffee floating up from the shop below. It had little touches here and there and reminded Kibum of the dark haired man and as a whole the space was comfortable. Clean but lived in. Perfect in every way, in Kibum's mind at least.
Jonghyun had successfully cleaned the bloody mess away from Kibum's face and placed a small butterfly bandage over a scrap that ran right down the bridge of his injured nose. There was some minor swelling, a faint purple hue and the scrap, but all in all Kibum felt grateful. He could feel it wasn't broken at least. But of course, the collar of his uniform was streaked with the rusty evidence of his injury. Jonghyun had taken most of the damage in that regard, the sleeves of his dress shirt blotted heavily and even a few stray smears across his tan skin.
Kibum downed the aspirin Jonghyun had given him and turned, leaning his back against the breakfast counter. Jonghyun was boring holes in him, eyes locked on and alarmingly serious. During their morning coffee, Jonghyun had always been light, all quick words and loud laughter. This was different.
He inhaled sharply, "Does this kind of thing happen often?"
"The punched in the nose thing? No. But the annoying name calling, shoving, what have you? Often enough. I don't think it will happen anymore though, so thank you." Kibum ran his hands down the thighs of his trousers to calm his nerves. He wasn't fond of talking about his problems, let alone with someone he found himself so deeply attracted to. He never even mentioned his troubles to his mother. But then again, she was busy working. A nurse at the hospital down town.
The chocolate eyes starring into him softened. "I hope so. I'm going to be frank. That's really fucked up. And why do they do it? What reason do they have?"
Kibum offered a shrug, averting his gaze. He wasn't one to lie. "Because I'm not interested in women."
Jonghyun snorted and rolled his eyes. "That's no reason to torture someone. I mean jesus, you'd think you fucked their sisters and never called them again... or brothers...". Kibum had a mind to be upset until he saw the glint in the older man's eyes. Teasing. Right. He continued with a serious tone, "But if they try anything again, let me know. I just won't... I can't. It's not going to happen again ok? And you can always come to me if you need help. If you need a place to stay."
Kibum sighed heavily, gingerly running his fingers down the bridge of his nose. Thankful yet again that it wasn't worse. "You don't have to worry about it, it's not your problem anyway."
Jonghyun shook his head, his brows pulled together in a frown as he cleared the space between them and grabbed Kibum's hand away from his face. "Look, we talk all the time. If that doesn't make us friends then I don't know what would. I might be acting a little forward here, but I mean what I say. Don't hesitate to knock on my door. Do you have a phone?"
The raven haired young man fished his baby blue lollipop out of his trouser pocket and pressed the device into Jonghyun's waiting palm. The key charm rattled around as the older man wasted no time in punching in his phone number and saving it to the contacts list before handing it back.
"Why are you being so kind to me?" Kibum's turn to frown. His eyes hurt as well as his nose, throbbing with each pump of his heart. hell his whole face still hurt, and the damn aspirin just wasn't kicking in yet.
Jonghyun's eyes went soft again. A chocolate bar on a hot day. "Because I know what it's like to have shit to fight through. Life is hard. People are fucking awful for the most part. I like you. You're genuine and it's so hard to find people like you around these days. So please, just let me be nice? I won't make you stay here of course. But if you'd like I can fish you out some PJ's and you can hang out here. I have to go back to the shop and make some money."
For the first time in a long time, Kibum cried. Not heavy sobbing, nothing over the top. It could barely be considered crying. But try as he might those few tears spilled over and made heavy trails down his high cheeks and hung in a drop on his chin. He sighed as Jonghyun wrapped his arms around him and pulled him close. He said nothing, but this wasn't the time for words. And Jonghyun didn't need to hear that Kibum was thankful. He swiped the evidence away with his thumbs and he knew.
"I think I'll stay here. My mom is working late tonight." Kibum's voice was barely above a whisper, his face cupped in Jonghyun's warm hands.
The older nodded and after some rummaging handed him a pair of comfy looking gray PJ pants and a large knit sweater, navy and cream striped. The pants fit surprisingly well, despite the height difference. But the sweater was big through the shoulder, hanging off and exposing milky white collarbone. The clothes smelled like Jonghyun and Kibum willed his heart to stop pounding as he folded his uniform up and sat them in the recliner where Jonghyun had gestured.
"Ok, so there's some food in the fridge if you get hungry. I have basic cable so that's kind of shit but I do have a whole bunch of movies. Make yourself comfortable! My bed is your for sleeping. Just rest ok? It's been a hard day and you look like you feel like shit." He laughed at Kibum's grimace. "Anyway, I really need to get back and run my shop. But I should be back around 7 at the very latest and we can decide on dinner or something. You're welcome to spend the night, and if you need I can run you home to pick up clothes and stuff."
With a quick hugh, Jonghyun was off. Apron in tow as he shut and locked the door. Kibum heard his footsteps on the stairs and heaved a sigh.
Alone. In the apartment of the man he'd been infatuated with since school began. He felt the smile play across his lips. had Jonghyun said he liked him? What did he mean by that exactly? His heart swelled but he willed it down and sat on the edge of Jonghyun's bed. It was large, warm, inviting. Well, his head was still killing him....
He curled himself into the softness of the comforter and the smell of the older man surrounded him, thick and calming, as he drifted off into sleep.
*HEY! So sorry it took me so long for this to get done. After quite a lot of deliberation I've decided to lengthen this piece out. Key seems more vulnerable than I'd first intended, and for them to jump right into physical intimacy just didn't feel right. Anyway, I'm going to start work on the 3rd piece like... right after I post this...
