New Media Maleness on the Run

Apr 11, 2008 09:28

So after reading Donna Haraway's feminist/new media rant I felt that I should be ashamed to be a male who owns a computer.

Haraway believes the new technology has created a militaristic culture(and the military is always defined by patriarchy) which has been at, "the cultural and economic expense of most people, but especially of women"

I think this statement is a bit radical, although in my opinion the article was somewhat radical to begin with. I don't think women are the only group which is suffering from new technology. I think the expense is also being carried by males as well. But of course since I'm a male arguing in the defense of males my argument probably isn't very valid.

Haraway also believes new technologies like video games produce, "high-tech, gendered imaginations." I think she may be reading too much into this. Although the cloak of gender subtly covers everything, I don't think it plays such an integral role in new media as Harraway suggests. Media should be about narrative, not about gender roles and how they become realized in society.

And please don't think I'm an anti-feminist or anything, because I really do believe in equal rights for all genders. I'm not a male chauvinist. This is my disclaimer so that I don't get shot next time I go to class.
