I watched "Dirt Nap" (aka SDW's favorite PB episode for INEXCUSABLE reasons, hee) during lunch and had some Thoughts about the end scene between Michael and Alex.
I'm talking about the scene where Alex tells Michael "it never gets easier" in his attempt to...IDK. It's not a COMFORTING thought, particularly, when you look at it. It's an acknowledgement of the sacrifice that Michael has made of a piece of his soul. Whistler is the one who says "Michael?" when he sees Michael face after Sammy's been killed. Alex at that point is running off to be sure there's no sinkhole. But once things are calm and everyone is recovering (side note that Alex also is the one who takes care of Whistler's injury in this scene), Alex sees what Whistler - and no one else - does. He know what happened and, most importantly, he knows how Michael feels about it.
And a lot of that is because Alex is a really good FBI agent and he has so thoroughly gotten inside Michael's head at that point. But the fact that he SAYS SOMETHING to Michael about it - and that it's not a platitude - means that it's more than trying to get Michael functional enough to escape again. It's...connection. It's what I think Alex has ALWAYS seen in Michael from the beginning of being put on his case: that he respects Michael, and likes him, and doesn't want to see him ruined. I think Alex feels guilty for Michael being in Sona, even though Michael is the reason Alex is in Sona, too.
It's an important shift in their relationship, though. First they get that "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" vibe when they're in the tunnels with Whistler, and then Alex offers an emotional hand to Michael in Michael's moment of moral crisis - and Michael doesn't push it away. Believe me, Michael has plenty of snark for people when he needs it. He could easily have kicked Alex's small gesture back in his face.
And then they fall in love and live mostly happily ever after the end.
I am super super SUPER behind on EVERYTHING, including Puplet's 37 month post, mostly because OF Puplet (good lord three is REALLY CHALLENGING), but I plan to catch up someday. Maybe even someday soon. WHO CAN SAY. Depends on how many more Prison Break feelings I have, I guess.
