Lessons of a new slash writer

Aug 01, 2006 08:15

I went to piano lessons yesterday for the first time in, what, six or seven weeks? It's been awhile. I had been considering dropping them, since I've been picking up new music and as long as I practice over and over, so far I've been able to learn all the things I've wanted to, but the lesson was super-fantastic and I'm committed to going regularly again. We're going to focus more on theory, especially on chords and how chords are built, as well as getting into more complicated music. My new piece to learn is by Chopin and it's intimdating, but I'm excited to learn it. I'll have a Lesson post later this week.

In non-piano news, there is a Farscape outtakes video over on YouTube that I recommend. Spoilers through PK Wars. Warning: will make you yearn to watch the show again.

I have been writing my F/V ficathon story (as well as working on two of my other F/V ideas) and there are things I'm learning about myself and slash and writing that I'm finding amusing and interesting.

The Top 7 Things I Have Learned (or Re-Learned) So Far
1. Somewhere in the last year, I have come to prefer the word 'cock' to 'dick.'
2. As I said in a chat the other day, the hardest thing about writing slash is keeping the cocks straight. Oh the horror of the pronoun!
3. My tendency towards mushiness is very, very high. Much higher than it would be with a canon couple.
4. I am utterly unable to keep some sort of plot out of my pairing stories. There has to be something, some outside influence, that moves it along. Character studies I can handle all right (as long as they're short), but once a relationship gets involved, I have to have a plot, too.
5. I write slowly, and am easily distracted when I'm just getting started. But once I'm into it, I hit the zone and get annoyed when my concentration is broken. I remember this feeling well, though it's been years since I've felt it.
6. I work best when there is noise that I can filter out. In a weird twist, the noise helps me concentrate better. Best places to write includes: classes (you would not believe how much I wrote in college), coffee shops, at home with music playing or the tv on in a different room, and airports. Airports are actually awesome places for me to write, because there is a ton of noise and no fear of it being directed at me, so I don't have to pay any attention at all. Except for my flight number, of course.
7. I missed writing. Which, wow, that is something I did not expect at all. I love vidding, and it fulfills a deep sense of joy for me, but there's a reason I wrote for fifteen years before I started vidding, I'd just forgotten it. There are stories in my head again, and the world is made fresh as my writer's eye starts to slowly open and look around. I'd forgotten how much you noticed when you're in writer's mode, how you tuck experiences away for later.

That being said - I cannot wait to get some time to vid this week. Heh.
