Sports these days is two weeks of pre-Super-Bowl-hype, relentless basketball, and an occasional hockey highlight.
Yawn.
Man, I need baseball. I need spring training. It's a lovely time when nobody is in last place and everybody has a shot. I once took a week's vacation to spring training, in 1989 and had a great time. I was working for TSR up in Lake Geneva, WI, at the time. Growing up in Texas, I never really understood what the big deal about Spring Break was all about, but after two Wisconsin winters, I understood completely. It was a great time, with visits to a few amusement parks and other activities (I saw a live space shuttle launch, albeit from 60 miles or so away) in between about ten spring training games.
Spring training used to be a sleepy little tradition that people didn't pay a lot of attention to. When I went in '89, it was just starting to get big, and today most games are sold out weeks in advance and hotel rooms are well-nigh impossible to find without a lot of planning. The clubs themselves offer package deals to their fans, and everything is packed. I haven't been back to Spring Training since '89, but I suspect I wouldn't like it quite as much.
