Got a call the other night from the IRS folks. I'm going back in on Feb. 1 for a brief retraining session where they tell us what parts of our job have changed since last year, and then it's hit the floor, or go teach new hires, or whatever else they want me to do.
I work in a section called ITIN, which stands for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. People who do not have a social security number but still need to file taxes must apply for an ITIN, and we're the folks who make sure they are eligible, identify the fixes required if they are not eligible, and assign the number. There are any of a number reasons a non-citizen would need an ITIN, but we don't care about the whys.
How many of our applicants are in the country illegally? Probably a lot of them, but we're not the immigration police. We just make it possible for them to pay their taxes, and I guess Uncle Sam thinks that's a good thing.
The job should run four months or so. I hope to parlay this into a full-time gig, but we'll see. I'm far from the only one with the same idea.
