I'm still alive!

Mar 17, 2012 09:54

Yes, the wolves hasn't got his old stud. I'm still alive, and kicking, biting and stamping.

CRACK! It's a line drive into center field. The wolf is going, going!! Ohhh he's caught! He's not getting up though.

[ahem] yeah, one down, how many to go.

Slowly however, I'm making progress. I've put in some serious time learning Python. Starting working on the first 6 chapters of "Learn Python the hard way" again, but using what I did 15 or so years ago when I was studying xBASE, and other languages. Type up the examples on each command, then playing with them, tinkering, changing, adding things to learn what each does. One of the nice things about interpreted languages. Make a change, it's immediate. Not like complied programs which can be a pain in the ass.

It's about a week before my first continuing ed classes are here. I have 2, then I'm free of that boring thing. I'll also be free of the trinity of having to put all my free cash into making sure I can pay for this, and other things. Right now, I'm pretty sure I can get my CE classes, then my real-estate sales-persons license classes paid for. The appraisal license, I'm not sure yet, but it'll still be a bit hit or miss. No way can I do this in 2 quarters as I so optimistically thought in Dec. [shugs] What ever. I have said now reciently. This will be the LAST YEAR I'm working pay check to pay check. Of course, I still have probably a year of rebuilding still. I have the following needing to do quickly.

  • $5,000 medical buffer savings. - Incase I get hit with a major medical, I can pay that without bankrupting myself.
  • A car - already looking for cheap ones. But will be at least 6 months before I can even consider.
  • Computer fund. $1,500 should be able to protect me from a major computer meltdown. I need a laptop, AND desktop systems anymore.
  • Getting a bike. Nothing fancy, but I'm getting a bike this year, get my weight down (Now down to 220!! only 20 more to go),
  • Vacation. No way am I going to have another year without one. A friend in TN has agreed to take me in for a week. He has 3 things I desperately need. Deep forests to get lost in, a herd of horses, and no demains on my time. Just need about $200 - 300 for food/cost to get there and back, etc.  I can swing it :)

But in good news, I finally have achived my computer goals!. I finally gave up on Debian. I was a loyal fan since V4 and Ubuntu 8. Ubuntu is so bloated, and slow, it's like XP, and when they moved to that Gnome 3/Unity WM, and now abandoning KDE, I tossed it aside. Tried Debian 5, then 6. But they're egos got the best of them.

Why I left debian? Well, basically they're getting away from their roots. I loved Debian because when it was released it was debugged well. it still is, but it's getting worse. The biggest problem however was Nouveau. The video driver.

I can live with a basic video driver, especially if ti handles dual monitors basically. However I will not stand for this idea you must use Nouveau, and have no upgrade path to the binary nVIDIA driver, without major sugary on your system. I have tried since v6.01 to find a way to install the nVIDIA driver. I count at least a dozen web sites, with a dozen ways of installing it. ALL are risky, and/or not possible for the average linux user. I destroyed my system dozens of times; the last time to the point, where even my image was corrupted. I either had to reinstall the OS from scratch, or go elsewhere.

Another major arrow was the installer itself. You download even a DVD version, and it'll want to download another 600+ megs of stuff while it was installing. At my connection speeds, that's 6+ hours to install the OS again. Without even the programs I use. Between that, and nouveau, I finally walked. Found OpenSUSE 12.1, and except for a few minor problems, I've been very happy with it. I get the binary nVIDIA driver, the Beryl cube, and dual monitors, as well as the most updated KDE (4.6) I only wish it was a .DEB instead of a .RPM since I have to download all my old programs in RPM format (if they exist :\) but that's been doable.

I finally had to put it on my netbook, and even KDE 4.6 (after you turn off all the fancy stuff) works just as good as XFDE (which, with debian 6, was a major joke.)

Lastly, (hehe) the big stud on FurryMUCK has a new girlfriend. Eyae'calitha - a dragonness of all species, captured the big stud. I will admit, I have taken even friendship with her cautiously. I've known her about 2 - 3 years. But she's a more mature, and seasonable person than the younger ones I've met. (and when I'm speaking about her this way, I mean her personality.) She's not demanding, accepting of the way he is, and his desires, and supportive. That's how to win the big stud's heart. Accepting him, as he is, do not try to change him. I think he's got a bit of some mule in him too ;).

Doesn't mean I'm abandoning anyone else, as we're both quite polygamous. It'd help if life would let met go, but this IS a busy quarter. At least all that half-ass projects problem are over and done for, so now I actually do have more time.

Lasty writing and art is on slow. I'm working on only 1 story now. The complete re-write of 'H8' until I can get more done. I've leaving myself notes for more stories, but H8 is the only one getting traction at the moment.

Art; well I still have abandoned furry art, and living art. Still planning on going back to architectural art, and it'll show up on my DA account (http://mbridge1965.deviantart.com/) I have a few buildings already in mind, that would be nice to work on. Right now I'm going to try to do an plein air type first. Photos tend to flatten, and screw up the perspective. It'd be nice to get out anyway.

Ok, back to work. Tails high Y'all :)
