Several years ago, I think around 5 or so, maybe longer I needed a new laptop desperately, but didn't have $1,000 or more for one. So I bought a refurbished IBM Thinkpad T22 for $700. Dissipate it's age, Win2k worked good with it, and over the years I've added it's maximum memory, new harddrive, new CDRom drive.
But the keyboard was always a pain in the ass. The space-key wouldn't work reliability, so finally when it 'died' (I thought it did) I got a netbook cause I could afford $350 at the time.
About 2 weeks ago, I was on FurryMUCK, and somehow we started talking of laptop replacement parts, and someone said that you could replace keyboards. I did some checking and sure enough the T22's keyboard could be replaced easily. Endy then found an eBay seller that sold them for $11.
SOLD!!
Not quite though....
next day two furs came out needing help, so there went that money. But next week ordered the keyboard, ran into problems with PayPal that very nearly queered the deal. But today, I got the keyboard.
10 minutes of very careful work, then booted up the system.
It didn't explode!!
It booted!!
Debian 5 didn't bitch!
It works!!!
Now the netbook goes into the closet, and Pegasus flies again!
After I install Debian 6 on it, and FINALLY wipe Win2k off it. I'm done with Windows with it for good.
I seriously doubt that KDE 4.5 will work on it, even WITH D6, but I can live with something like LXCE or Enlightenment.
If you want a good laptop, consider a refurbished IBM Thinkpad. I'm hearing reports from Consumer Reports that Lenevo laptops are start to go down in quality. I'm not surprised really. I thought it'd happen, when IBM Sold out. I just read that a T40 (last true IBM thinkpad) runs W7!! Also EBay and Overstock.com has them less than $300. The keyboard is superior to any laptop or desktop on the market.
Wow...I may just get a new laptop :).
