A long lost...

A long lost....friend? Is that what LiveJournal is? I don't know. I haven't been 'round here in a while.

Let'see. There's a lot thats has happened since my last posting.
1. Finished Junior year of college.
(that's a rather important one)
2. Now a CompLit major (as well as a Geology major)
3. Fell for two girls (not simultaneously mind you), pursued one, succeeded with neither.
4. Performed in two plays (Salome and Urinetown)
5. Went to France for Christmas
6. Went to Big Bend NP on Spring Break
7. Moved into and out of Andrews Hall and then into my new apartment
8. Became addicted to tea
9. Got noticeably better at singing, largely to the Madrigals' credit
10. Got into my first (and hopefully only) car accident...it was a "fender-bender" that was mostly my fault (I have explanations though, if not excuses!). I still have to get my door replaced, dammit.
11. Became a Contra-dancing junky.
12. Matured. Significantly.

Now that I've got that covered nicely, I can tell you what I'm doing this summer. For the summer, I'm working in the petrology lab in the basement of GeoChem. I'm working with Mac Rutherford (geo prof) doing some controlled experiments on Mount St. Helens samples. Basically it subjecting natural samples to constructed temperature and pressure conditions of the earth so that you see if you can recreated the characteristics of the sample you started out with. This is so you can understand the processes that happen beneath the earth through experimentation. Isn't that cool?! I think it is. It's remarkable how a pea-sized amount of rock (or smaller!) can tell you about something that goes on so far below the surface.

Oh, and for the record, this material is recently erupted stuff. Many people don't realize that Mt. St. Helens is continuously erupting. It has been erupting since October of 2004. It's not the violent eruptions people expect of volcanos, but actually just a rising lava dome (GRAY-colored, NOT red - get rid of those stereotypes!!). Still it's at like 1 cubic meter per second. Sluggish relative to former rates, but considerable nonetheless. I'd be happy to describe in more detail what I'm doing - it's exciting stuff, really!

Otherwise, I'm just hanging out here in Providence. I ran into a contra-dancing friend (an older woman) and it looks like she'll be able to give me a ride to the Cranston Contra dance on Saturday. I'm looking forward to it! Hopefully that will pan out. She also talked to me about the "Rehoboth Players" who play contra music on Sunday nights for kicks. I think I may go to that too! We'll see if I feel ambitious.

Now let's see if I keep this LJ thing going...maybe I'll get back into it.
