I am hoping to attend next year's Comic Con, which will be my first time. I want to start planning ahead, and to come up with a game plan

1.) No. They don't start selling badges until the appointed hour exactly so it's basically down to first come, first serve and sheer luck. The past few years it's gotten insane trying to buy badges so the selling process has changed various times and it's been a nightmare. Last year actually went really smoothly pace wise but the particular method of how many badges a person could purchase fucked everything up and everything sold out way too fast. I heard they're changing that this year to make it more fair for everyone.
2.) They sell the passes with and without preview night at the same time but the badges with preview night sell out way faster. I will recommend trying to get a badge with preview night if you can because they sell a limited amount of them and it allows access to roam the exhibition hall early for a while, they pass out tons of free swag and there are sneak peek panels for certain upcoming shows. Your trip won't be ruined if you can't attend preview night but it's definitely super fun.
3.) Unfortunately, that I don't have any info to help you out because I live in SoCal, therefore traveling and housing is not an issue for me. Sorry :(
4.) Considering next season will be Dexter's final one they'll most likely have one last panel at next years Comic-con. Dexter's panels are always held in Ballroom 20 (which is the second largest room at the convention center) and it's usually later on in the day. However, if this is the ultimate panel that you really want to attend then no matter what time the panel starts, you will want to line up for Ballroom 20 first thing in the morning when you get there. You will have to sit through all the other panels held before Dexter but fortunately that allows you to take the chance to secure closer seats with the end of each previous panel as certain attendees leave the room and seats become free for the picking if you can get them. I do that every year and by the time my desired panel is up I have gotten myself some super sweet seats.
5.) Yes, as long as you have someone that is nice enough to secure your place in line (a friend or simply the person behind you), you may leave to get food or pee.
6.) Same answer as before. As long as you have someone willing to save your seat for you, which isn't hard to find because pretty much everyone at Comic-con is extremely friendly. You can eat and drink in any of the panel rooms. They don't care.
I hope you are able to get yourself a badge this year. I can honestly tell you Comic-con is one of the most fun and awesome experiences ever. Not to mention downtown San Diego, and just SD in general, is beautiful. I've lived in SD for most my life and I've been going to CC for years and it never loses it's appeal for me. The only downfall is how much more crowded it's gotten but whatever, I can deal. Good luck!
Also, it helps to tag team the seat creeping -- DON"T give up your current seat till your partner has secured better ones for sure. Otherwise, you could end up stranded. Also, don't stab anyone in the eye with a pen. It can get kind of stressful.

I know I shouldn't have laughed at that but I totally did. And no joke, I was in Hall H that day when that happened. I was on the opposite side of the room so I didn't know what was going on at the time but I heard the commotion. People are insane.
