I had Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility playing in the background while doing homework when suddenly I was inspired to re-cast the movie with Marvel Cinematic Universe characters. At first I considered doing a genderswap similar to
An Assembly Such as This by
lady_ragnell, which is a fantastic Avengers Regency AU. But in the end, I just couldn't make myself re-cast Elinor or Marianne with canon male characters--especially not if I wanted to keep the Regency setting. So, here's what my cast list would look like, if I ever got around to writing this AU:
S&S Character
MCU Character
Elinor Dashwood
Jane Foster
Marianne Dashwood
Darcy Lewis
Edward Ferrars
Thor Odinson
Col. Christopher Brandon
Bruce Banner
John Willoughby
Clint Barton
Lucy Steel
Loki Laufeyson
Mrs. Dashwood
Erik Selvig
Margaret Dashwood
Steve Rogers
Fanny Dashwood nee Ferrars
Nick Fury
John Dashwood
Phil Coulson
Mrs. Jennings
Tony Stark
Sir John Middleton
Pepper Potts
Charlotte Palmer nee Jennings
Jim Rhodes
Thomas Palmer
Natasha Romanova
Mrs. Ferrars
Odin Allfather
Robert Ferrars
Sif (or 616!Balder?)
Eliza Williams
Betty Ross II
The characterisations don't fit perfectly, but trying to match up the characters by personality meant sacrificing the relationships. I mean, Loki as Lucy Steel, manipulating Jane and Thor, makes so much sense to me.
Also, it fits to cast Jane, Darcy, and Erik as Elinor, Marianne, and Mrs. Dashwood since we already saw their pseudo-family in Thor. Nick Fury and Phil Coulson would be Fanny and John Dashwood, coming to steal the Dashwood women's stuff and reduce them to poverty. I feel bad for casting Clint as the gold-digging philanderer Willoughby, but I couldn't quite make myself pair Darcy with Tony. Tony would make a great Willoughby, IMHO, and Natasha is more like Elinor than Jane is, but then Pepper or Maria would be totally miscast as Marianne. Again, I sacrificed character-fit for relationship-fit and instead cast the Iron Man characters as the wealthy distant relatives who take in the homeless Dashwoods. (See: every post-Avengers fic in which everyone moves into Stark Tower.)
Bruce, of course, is the brooding Colonel Brandon with the tragic romantic history, who is way too old for Darcy but wins her over with his kindness and generosity. As this is based more on Thompson's movie than the novel, I'd like to think Darcy would only marry Bruce if she really loved him. (In the novel, it feels as though Marianne marries Brandon more out of gratitude than romantic love--but that's my modern sensibility talking.)
Alas, I left Maria Hill out in the cold! She could have been John Dashwood instead of Coulson, I suppose, but she's never interacted with Jane, Darcy, or Erik and so that didn't quite fit.
