A few years ago,
ann1962 explained to me that elementary and high schools in the U.S. started in August, which I hadn't known before. And now I find out that might be true for colleges and universities as well? Ugh, the U.S. university/college system is confusing me right now! Would someone on my dwircle/flist kindly explain it to this poor Canadian? Because I'm beginning to suspect that basic dates I'd assumed were true for the U.S. academic calendar are, in fact, completely off.
Do Americans start college after Labour Day? If not, when do they start their Fall terms? When are midterms (if indeed they have midterms)? From what I can tell, American Thanksgiving is a whole week off? Or something? I don't really understand how you can have Thanksgiving in late November and then go back to school and have your finals 2-3 weeks later. Unless you don't have finals in December? How does Spring Break work? Is that the same as your reading week?
Honestly, it's not really important that I figure this out... But I'm still baffled!
