Spoilers for 1x10 and spoiler-free speculation (though I do reference comics canon).
This is... not in any kind of order.
- Sportsmaster seems very... Deathstroke-y. Which is probably not a name the Cartoon Network wants to use on a show aimed at young children, so Sportsmaster it is, gotcha. Even the
Teen Titans (2003) cartoon simply called him Slade. Sportsmaster also has blond hair and brown eyes, which means
it's very likely he is Artemis' dad after all. Ah well, she still has more of Cass' backstory, if not the name.
- Roy/Cheshire FTW. I was totally rooting for them to kiss. :D
- LEX LUTHOR = BADASS. He called Roy "adorable". I love it when bad guys are smart and scary enough to make the good guys earn their victory. Also, damn, Mercy has a robotic arm/is a robot. That's new.
- Wait, what's the target age for this show? Because "rhetoric" is kind of a big word for elementary school kids. Huh. (Not that I think they should dumb it down, but it's one thing to use big words in a book when a kid can put it down and find a dictionary, and another thing in a TV show that doesn't have a glossary at the end.)
- Oh, hey, they pronounced Ra's al Ghul's name properly. (Christopher Nolan, please take note!)
- It's implied/suspected that The Light has a mole on the Young Justice team. Obvious bet is Artemis, which is why I don't think it's her. I'm willing to bet Kon Superboy is a sleeper agent. Not his fault, it's just in his programming. *cough*comics canon*cough*
- Omigod M'gann's routine!! SO CUTE. I love that the cheerleaders were just NICE FRIENDLY GIRLS. I am so sick and tired of the bitchy cheerleader stereotype, so for me this was totally subverting that trope. I love that M'gann is so excited to be making new friends and joining a team at school.
- Lucas Carr is their teacher. He snapped his fingers to get their attention. Ahahaaha! *dies and is dead*
- Superboy has such a hair-trigger temper. Needs to work on that. God, his reaction to the Superman t-shirts was so... *bites lip* Damn, boy. Identity issues much? (I LOVE IT.)
- Clark, why haven't you given Superboy his name yet?? Though I wonder if maybe Clark already suspects Superboy is a sleeper agent and is doing this weird "I might have to put him down and I don't want to get emotionally invested" distance thing. Of course, he could just be an emotional coward because he's freaked out over suddenly having a "son", no need for a more complicated reason.
- ...okay, clearly the DCAU has skewed my understanding of the Martians, because I thought J'onn was supposed to be the last of his race. But now he's got a niece (13 nieces, apparently) and there are White Martians and Green Martians, and oppression of the White Martian minority? I need to brush up on my comics canon.
It's interesting to compare YJ to
Toon Titans. The characters aren't exactly analogous (well obviously, since they are different characters), but there do seem to be definite "types".
Like, Starfire and M'gann are the sweet, friendly, has-a-crush-on-eligible-boy manic pixie dream girls (not a term I've used before, but it fits) and Beast Boy and Wally are the impulsive, cocky, get-in-over-their-heads, horn-dogging-the-hot-girl, teenage boys. Kaldur and Cyborg don't really have much in common, though, and I can't really map Kaldur on TT!Robin either, though they're both the team leaders. TT!Robin is much, much darker than YJ!Robin. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Artemis had more in common with TT!Robin, with a Slade character working on her, trying to tip her to the dark side.
And while M'gann is the YJ character most like Raven in terms of powers, I think Superboy will get Raven's arc and the SUDDEN ONSET OF EVIL that he'll need to fight. It'll be a battle for his free will and his identity.
So, okay! I didn't ship any of the kids in the Teen Titans cartoon except maybe Robin/Raven a little (and *cough*Robin/Slade*cough*), but I like quite a few YJ pairings so far:
- M'gann/Superboy = CUTE. I didn't think it was possible for me to ship Superboy in a het pairing: I love that Kon flirts with anyone with breasts, but I could never wrap my head around Kon/Cassie. M'gann is so bubbly and sweet, though, and she and Superboy are adorable together.
- Wally/Artemis = totally Beatrice/Benedict with the snark and bickering. I can't wait until Wally finally clues into how completely hot and awesome Artemis is. It'll be HILARIOUS.
- Roy/Cheshire = YES PLEASE. Also, I know that a show aimed at kids won't let them have SEX and CHILD OUT OF WEDLOCK, but damn, I hope fandom writes some of that fic now. ♥LIAN♥ It'll make up for what happened in the comics, to an extent.
- Ollie/Roy = bitter exes who need to reconcile, please, because I hate it when my Arrows are (stuck) at war with each other.
- Kaldur/Roy = not quite there yet, but there's potential. I liked Kaldur/Superboy in "Independence Day" (1x01-1x02), but M'gann/Superboy quickly took the lead there. Before fandom can really ship Kaldur with anyone, he needs more concentrated one-on-one screentime with them. Preferably with Roy! I just can't imagine him with any of the others.
Not shippy in a romantic sense, but I also want more Superboy & Superman and more Artemis & Roy & Ollie. (I want more Ollie, period.) Because I love my superhero families, as weird and broken and estranged though they might be, and I really want them to figure out their daddy issues.
I never thought it was possible, but Dick is the character for whom I have the least interest! I love the Bat-fam, but in this iteration Robin is mostly there to kick butt and be Battish. If this was Tim, then yeah, I'd want more Robin-Superboy interaction, but it's Dick and therefore I don't see the point.
More Clark/Bruce please. Especially Bruce telling Clark to shape up already.
I prefer
