I love Cameron Mitchell. That is all.
I love his enthusiasm for life, for adventure. I love his willingness to put himself out there, open and innocent, at least compared to the rest of SG-1, and emotionally available. I love the way he softens his hardened teammates, and baffles them, and makes them groan and facepalm and hide their smiles.
I love how he struggles and works to be better, not just in rehab after his crash, but clearly studying up on every scrap of knowledge he can get his hands on, even though I'm sure Sam's science goes right over his head and most of what Daniel says is a foreign language. But he's willing to learn, eager to learn, and I respect that. I love his intelligence.
I love his respect for those around him, whether they are his superiors, his equals, or his subordinates. I love his respect for the skills and experience of others. I love his protective instincts, his deference, his sense of boundaries.
The guy is so very American, with some of the limitations of his upbringing, but also the strengths. He's so very much a guy. He makes fat jokes that aren't funny, and detests sexist behaviour and the harassment of women. He's probably unaware of his own white privilege, and yet remains respectful of other people's cultures.
He's rooted, self-aware, confident in his abilities, and yet still searching for identity, still unfinished and young. There's a love of duty and honour, and a love of people and their stories. There's a kindness and friendliness that is very attractive, and a naïveté that's dangerous.
I love that he's a friend and a buddy, that he's there equally for the times of horrific personal trauma, and for the times when you want to demolish an entire meat lover's pizza. I love his faith, his loyalty, his endurance. I love that it is possible for him to break, when stripped of all that he holds dear. I love that he wants to be a hero, and follows through on it, failing occasionally, and succeeding often.
I love that he's a good, decent guy with very little asshole in him.
