Random kidfic meta: SG-1 Team vs SGA Team

Reading SGA fic in which Torren plays a significant role always makes me nostalgic for Cassandra Fraiser. Watching Sam Carter totally losing it in the elevator in "Singularity" (1x15) was what finally converted me into a Stargate fan, and I always, always come back to that episode as the moment SG-1 became a family ( Read more... )

I think one of the big issues is the single-pairingness of SGA fandom. It doesn't seem to me (in my admittedly limited reading) that SG-1 fanfic concentrates on a single pairing to the exclusion of the other characters. Both Jack/Daniel and Jack/Sam are big pairings, but it doesn't seem that either of them totally dominates the way John/Rodney does, to the point where about 90% of all fic in the entire fandom is John/Rodney. For some reason, fandom wanted to see SGA as a buddy show with the entire emphasis on the relationship between two characters, and most of the time the entire rest of the cast is peripheral.

I don't get that vibe off SG-1 fandom at all. For example, browsing through the new AO3 archive, I see lots of gen and lots of different pairings. There's a lot more emphasis on all the relationships in the team, on a more wholistic view.

Yeah, who da thunk we'd ever be grateful for the J/D vs J/S 'shipper wars? *g* But compared to John/Rodney's domination of SGA fandom, I'll take 'shipper wars any day. I was a J/D slasher from day one and I won't deny there was Sam-bashing in slashdom (just like there was Daniel-bashing amongst J/S 'shippers), but there were also a lot of really fantastic BNF writers who wrote plotty epic genfic, or even plotty epic slashfic that respected Sam and Teal'c. Teal'c never got as much play as others, but I know LJ fandom has tried to rectify that. Sam/Janet was also a pretty popular femslash pairing.

I can't remember where we'd discussed it, but there's the theory that SGA fandom is 90% the John/Rodney buddy show due to fannish migration. A few Big Name Fans from other buddy shows (e.g. Due South) migrated to SGA late S1, early S2 and everyone followed along. So even though SGA S1 was not at all a buddy show (though SGA did, at times, become the John and Rodney show), fandom became skewed that way.
