Fanart is HARD

I've been working on a wallpaper for the last couple of hours and I'm growing a bit disheartened by my limited skills. The wallpaper looks okay, it's not hideous or anything. But it's still incredibly amateur. There's no real composition, no focus. No texture or life to it at all.

It's the same problem I sometimes run into when making icons, only more pronounced. Icons are so tiny that mistakes are forgivable. Or if you've really screwed it up, you can tell because it's freakin' obvious just by looking at the ugly thing. But keeping it simple isn't good enough with wallpapers -- it just ends up looking bare and unfinished. Gah!

Look at lerefuge/Neige's art, for example: she tells a story with her wallpapers. Every square centimetre is used to full effect.

Yeah, I know. Go read a tutorial. I'm still pouting though.
