My parents were born in the mid-to-late 1940s and if they had any black friends or acquaintences growing up, I wouldn't know it. As far as I can tell, neighborhoods weren't very integrated -- they were in all-jewish, all-italian neighborhoods for the most part.
Socially, my family has generally had moderate-to-liberal political attitudes and I know both of my parents were supporters (though not activists) during the Civil Rights movement hedeys...
The one I can remember is a cousin of mine who was a professional trumpet player for many years, and the only time he's discussed blacks outside of a political context it was to disparage the work ethic of the african american musicians he'd played with. That said, this cousin critizes everyone and complains about everything, so I don't know if it's racism or general misanthropy and such...
Bascially, I come from a family where my parents and cousins have said the "right" things in terms of race relations -- but I think did so without really having the day-to-day involvement to make it more than an academic matter.
