On the one hand, I'm glad that PotC: Dead Man's Chest is a sensational blockbuster success -- 10-day total of $258.2 million, says
Yahoo!. I'm amazed that they could turn a Disney ride into two movies of such high quality. I really enjoyed the first movie, though I never fangirled it, and I definitely plan to see the second movie. PotC is a fun romp, but it was nothing that sank into my consciousness the way that, say, V for Vendetta did earlier this year.
OTOH, I'm sorry that PotC is taking movie-goers away from Superman Returns, which needs to do really well so we can build momentum for future DC Comics superhero movies, especially Joss Whedon's Wonder Woman. Okay, okay, I shouldn't say PotC is hurting Superman -- I suppose it's not a zero-sum equation. It just feels that way, sometimes. Though it's probably fair to say that the PotC hype is taking attention away from Superman's return.
Having said that, I must admit I never got to the movie theatre this weekend, as I'd originally intended. I went to dinner on Lakeshore with friends Saturday night, then shopping with them again Sunday afternoon. Saturday afternoon was spent lounging around in my air-conditioned house. Lord almighty it's hot out!
Will attempt to see Superman Returns tonight. I really mean it this time!
