FIC: Not Even a Hint Left Behind

First, I want to say to all those in the path of Hurricane Katrina that my thoughts are with you. I hope everyone stays safe and well.

Here's my story for the Writers' Workout Challenge, using the first person subjective, a completely new fan fiction writing experience for me. I loved this challenge. It really did push me to consider new things. ( Read more... )

Now *this* is what I call a story with a happy ending! *blissful sigh* Although it's a *leetle* hard to swallow a Lana who didn't make their lives all about Her Drama. But maybe this is the difference between AlMiles!Lana and the "true" Lana, Lana as she should have been: a supporting character in the Epic Drama of Clark & Lex's lives, not the Star.

erm, also -- starlings don't build twig nests, they nest in holes, and usually communally. Blue Jay, Robin, Mourning Dove (particularly careless nesters, often within view of a window, and nests fall apart easily) are all possibilities. None of them will feed their young seeds, though: it's a high-protein diet only for them all until fledging at least. And the sound of the babies isn't really a squawk, it's always pretty high-pitched.

Hee! Obviously I'm not a bird person. Too bad about the starlings. I really like the word "starling." Hmm. Will have to find another bird. Robins will always belong to "The Secret Garden" for me. Doves have too much symbolism. And Blue Jays are nasty, nasty creatures. We had a nest of them at one of the houses where we lived when I was a child, and they used to swoop down at my cat and peck him on the back. Nasty creatures!

What about sparrows? They build a nest and have a really pretty birdsong.

Sparrow works! Still has the same poetic sound to the name. Thank you! I would have been googling birds all day. *g*

Ah, I though you wanted something nasty -- Starlings are very aggressive (they tend to grab holes from native hole-nesting species, creating a "housing crisis") and phenomenally *loud* and messy.

American Robins are not like English Robins. grump.

Other choices: Thrasher, Mockingbird (another v. loud aggressive species: "If that Mockingbird don't sing . . . we'll be really surprised . . . even when it's the middle of the night"), Catbird, Redstart (a pleasant, pretty, small species, a flycatching warbler) . . . hm, I'll look through my bird book and see if there's anything with a particularly nice name.

I did some reading about starlings after your comment, and who knew they were such nasty creatures?! They have such a nice-sounding name. It's just...wrong, I tell you. *g*
