No! Stop! No more!

My friends (not you, dear digitalized LJ friends, but Real Life friends) and colleagues are not very smart. Or perhaps they are greedy. Or both.

Or perhaps they think I'm greedy.

In any case, in the past few days I have received the same message several times from unrelated people. In the message, they included me in their fifteen forwarding addresses (not BCC'ed, of course, but in the to:-field) advertising a "new" television program that offers free iPods to anyone who advertises the program further by forwarding the message to fifteen others. To "prove" you have fulfilled the requirements, you are supposed to send a CC of the message to someone related to the "show".

HELLO?!?

Ever heard of hoaxes? Chain mail ring any bells? How about, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually isn't true? Something like this throws up half a dozen red flags. "Forward", "Free", "Well-known organization (in this case a t.v. channel)"

In other words, use your brain, people. Before you jump on the bandwagon and give away the e-mail addresses of everyone you know to spammers in an attempt to obtain a free iPod. Please.

To add insult to injury, this hoax has been around for three years. Though back in the day, they gave away free discmans.

And I have too many icons that would fit this post. But I don't think I have used this particular juno_magic  creation yet.

ranting, friends, spam, real life
