So, last week I visited B in Germany. Aside from loooong (though fortunately unadventurous) train journeys, I had a wonderful time. The weather could've been a tad better, but compared to some of the initial forecasts, it could've been a LOT worse as well. We basically only had one day that was really rainy (and we had an indoors backup plan for that :))
What did we do? Well, we went hiking twice, using
Geocache routes (aka treasure hunting with modern toys, using GPS). It was an interesting experience, and it kept hiking a bit more exciting than just putting one foot in front of the other and not tripping. Also, it meant not having to constantly be on guard for hiking trail markers, since you basically walk from one waypoint to the next, and in between you can enjoy the landscape. Finding the "treasure" (usually crap in a plastic box, LOL) wasn't as important to me as the actual journey -- though I did manage to find it both times, ha! Little sniffer dog, that's me.
We also visited B's sister, and went cycling with her. German bikes are not as comfy as Dutch ones, though...
On the first not-so-nice day, we visited a
miniature train display (and managed to spend all of two hours pouring over it!), as well as an
exhibition of nativity scenes. Yes, in September. It was rather interesting, though, to see how different artists and cultures interpret the well-known and common theme, with the ones from the far east having Asian-looking Joseph and Maria, and there was a Heidi-lookalike Maria as well, while the display from Malta had a very
Maltese windmill. And so on, and so forth.
On the last day of my visit, another slightly rainy day, we went to explore an abandoned
lead mine (now a museum) where we basically got a private guided tour, due to the fact we were the only ones there. On top of that, we visited the towns of
Monschau and Bad Münstereifel, and did a LOT of driving through the northern
Eifel.
All in all, it was short, but it was a fun holiday. Photos coming whenever I have the time to properly process them (I think I'm running three holidays behind, so that could be a while...).
